Chapter 14 - The Hearing

The protective order hearing forced everyone into same courthouse.

Not room.

Separate waiting areas.

I saw Eleanor once through glass.

She looked older.

Jessica thinner.

Daniel alone.

Richard angry.

Always angry.

My attorney presented hospital video.

Recordings.

Letters.

Protective order violation.

Richard’s lawyer argued:

No ongoing threat.

Richard had no intention of approaching infants.

The judge asked:

“Why address a child by a name his parents did not give him?”

Richard answered before lawyer stopped.

“Because Noah is not his real name.”

The room froze.

My attorney:

“What is his real name?”

Richard:

“Nathan.”

There.

He still believed his decision existed.

The judge extended restrictions.

No contact with me, David, or children.

No indirect messages.

No social media references identifying babies.

No approach home/daycare later.

Then Richard glared at Daniel.

“You did this.”

Daniel replied:

“No.”

Then stopped.

He had learned no explanations.

Then outside, Daniel asked through attorney if he could see me privately.

I agreed five minutes in conference room with counsel.

He sat.

“I’m getting divorced.”

“I know.”

“I’m moving.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“I want to ask one question.”

“What?”

“If someday you forgive me, do I ever get to know them?”

I looked at him.

“Not now.”

“I know.”

“I need you to understand you were not innocent because you recorded.”

“I do.”

“You sat in conversations about which one of my sons should belong to you.”

“Yes.”

“You let Jessica build a nursery.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Dad manipulated London.”

“Yes.”

“You had weeks to call.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Why should I ever trust you?”

He took time.

“You shouldn’t because I ask.”

Good.

Then:

“I have to become someone you could choose to trust.”

Better.

I left.

No promise.

Then Jessica’s plea negotiations.

She admitted creating forged forms and false attorney letter.

She admitted knowing I had not consented.

She admitted trying to take Caleb? She reached toward bassinet but claimed instinct. Hospital video showed. Prosecutors didn't need overcharge.

She admitted call to hospital pretending lawyer involvement.

She denied plan to drug me and texts supported she rejected actually giving medication.

She agreed to testify against Richard and Eleanor where truthful.

Then sentence recommendation later.

Eleanor also pled? Not yet.

She wanted avoid trial and admitted.

Richard refused everything.

Of course.

Then Daniel’s divorce became ugly.

Jessica sought spousal support and house share.

Normal family law.

Criminal conduct does not erase property rights.

They mediated eventually.

House sold.

Nursery dismantled.

Daniel asked what to do with baby items.

Donate.

He did.

No dramatic burning.

Then a women’s shelter? Baby supplies better donated to family resource center.

Good.

Then we received restitution check? Not yet.

No financial loss major except security/legal maybe.

Then babies.

At six weeks adjusted age, Grace smiled? Early maybe. By two months.

Noah reflux.

Caleb slept best.

Individual personalities.

No more Baby A.

Baby B.

Baby C.

Then David returned to work part time.

I panicked first day.

Night nurse came.

Friend Leah.

We built community outside family.

Then my mother sent apology through attorney.

I refused to read.

Too soon.

Continue to the next part: Daniel asks whether he can ever become an uncle again, but Maya refuses to turn his remorse into immediate access to the children he once imagined receiving.
