Chapter 18 - What Eleanor Could Finally Say

Before sentencing, Eleanor asked for one meeting.

Through counsel.

No children.

David asked if I wanted him.

“No.”

I needed mother alone.

We met in mediator’s office.

She looked smaller.

“Hi, Maya.”

I did not call her Mom.

“What do you want?”

“To explain.”

“I know why.”

“Do you?”

“Daniel couldn’t have children. I had three. You thought redistribution was fair.”

She winced.

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

She stared at hands.

“Your father has always believed sons continue families.”

“I know.”

“I believed I didn’t.”

“But?”

“When you married David and took Bennett…”

“I kept Vance as middle.”

“I know.”

“Then what?”

“I felt like you left.”

I laughed.

“I got married.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel got married too.”

“He stayed Daniel Vance.”

There.

Names.

Then:

“When Jessica could not have children, I thought our branch ended.”

“Your branch?”

“I know how it sounds.”

“It sounds exactly like what it was.”

She cried.

Then:

“When you had two sons at once, I felt…”

“What?”

“Relief.”

I stared.

“Then Richard said one could stay Vance.”

“You mean become Daniel’s.”

“Yes.”

“And you let that become more important than me being their mother.”

“Yes.”

Finally.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you come when I called at 2 a.m.?”

She cried harder.

“Because Richard said if we drove you, David would ask why we were suddenly involved.”

“What?”

“He wanted us to arrive after delivery when everything was calm.”

“So you left me alone in labor to preserve the plan.”

“Yes.”

That hurt more than forged paper.

Mom had heard my fear.

Chosen logistics.

Then:

“Did you think I might die?”

She looked horrified.

“No.”

“Emergency C section happened.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t know then.”

“No.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I believed she was.

Not enough.

Then:

“Do you expect relationship?”

“No.”

“Grandchildren?”

“No.”

That surprised.

“I hope someday, but I have no right.”

Good.

Then I said:

“I am not ready to forgive you.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Then:

“You may write to me through attorney once a year.”

Her face lifted.

“Not babies. Me.”

“Yes.”

“Do not ask for pictures.”

“Yes.”

“Do not ask Daniel to carry messages.”

“Yes.”

“Do not criticize David.”

“Yes.”

Boundaries.

Then she called me:

“Maya.”

Not sweetheart.

Not daughter.

Respecting distance.

We left.

Then sentencing.

Eleanor received a combination of custodial time shorter than Richard’s, suspended portion? Could be several years probation with short confinement due nonviolent first offender and cooperation. Let's say one year in county/state custody plus probation? Fraud/forgery and conspiracy serious. Maybe 18 months custody and supervised release.

Jessica similarly received shorter custodial sentence and probation due cooperation, no prior record, no physical baby removal.

Daniel no criminal charge, but subpoenaed, divorce.

Richard received several years incarceration plus probation after release and no contact orders extended.

Not life.

Not absurd.

Then civil lawsuit? We could sue for damages. Did we? Maybe hospital bills from assault minor, legal costs. We chose not to pursue beyond restitution because criminal case enough. But forged docs caused legal fees. Court ordered restitution to some.

Then David said:

“It’s over.”

“No.”

Not yet.

“Legally soon.”

“Yes.”

Emotionally, babies were four months old.

May you like

We had a lifetime.

Continue to the next part: Eleanor admits she left Maya alone in premature labor because helping her too early would have interfered with the family’s plan after the birth.
