Chapter 8 - The House Was Never Empty

The argument my family repeated most was:

“You weren’t using it.”

As if empty property becomes communal.

I decided to find out how empty it had actually been.

Utility records showed unauthorized occupancy on at least thirty eight weekends over three years.

Thirty eight.

I personally stayed there perhaps twenty six weekends.

My family and strangers used it more than I did.

I had been paying for a house other people occupied while I worked to pay for it.

Then wear.

A property inspector documented.

Dock rail loosened.

Guest room mattress damaged.

Carpet stains.

Two missing lamps.

Outdoor chair replaced.

Cabinet hinge.

Grill burners.

Ordinary vacation wear.

Estimated repairs:

$11,600.

Not destruction.

Usage.

Then cleaning.

My mother paid a cleaner sometimes.

Other times relatives cleaned.

The cleaner believed Elaine owned.

She had invoices.

$7,800 total.

Legitimate scheme cost.

Then landscaping.

Dad paid $2,400 from LLC for yard service twice.

But I already paid landscaper annually.

Duplicate.

The extra service included staging before guests.

Then groceries.

Mother purchased welcome baskets from LLC.

Wine.

Coffee.

Snacks.

Some relatives had mocked me for not stocking fridge before “family weekend.”

They were using business money to stock strangers while expecting me to stock them free.

The absurdity almost helped.

Then a renter sent photographs.

My family had replaced a framed print in living room with sign:

WELCOME TO VOSS LAKESIDE RETREAT.

I had never seen because they removed before my visits.

They stored sign under crawlspace.

Inspector found.

Also laminated house manual:

Richard: primary host.

Elaine: guest support.

Keaton: tech.

Emergency:

Do not contact property owner directly.

Those words.

Why?

Because if guests contacted me, scheme ended.

Then emergency procedure:

For property issue, call Richard.

For medical emergency, 911.

At least.

Then WiFi network.

They changed router guest network to LakeVossGuest.

My own network remained hidden.

They scheduled guest WiFi only on rental weekends.

Keaton knew enough.

Then smart TV logins.

Guests had used my streaming accounts? My accounts logged out; they installed separate Roku? Maybe.

No need.

Then one thing I did not expect.

A thank you card in kitchen vent? No.

Could be guestbook hidden in ottoman.

Inspector found small leather guestbook.

Three years of entries.

“Thank you Richard and Elaine.”

“Beautiful family home.”

“See you next summer.”

“Keaton was a great host.”

One entry:

“Hope to meet Arden one day. Richard says she’s the reason this house exists.”

I sat with that.

My father had not erased me completely.

He used me as story.

Nurse daughter worked hard.

Family built dream.

He told guests I bought it.

Then converted my work into family achievement.

Maybe he even believed.

That was the psychological core.

To Richard, my accomplishments were raw material family could claim because they raised me.

Then a later entry:

“Thanks for discount. Richard says Arden is too busy saving lives to enjoy it anyway.”

I closed book.

I was not too busy to enjoy.

May you like

I was choosing when.

That choice was stolen.
