Chapter 14 - Keaton’s Cooperation
Keaton’s sentencing memorandum was the first document that made me understand he had been both perpetrator and product.
Not excuse.
Context.
He had grown up after I left home.
Dad solved every problem.
Parking ticket.
Credit card.
Job.
Mom cleaned emotional mess.
I became family joke.
Arden works too much.
Arden thinks she’s independent.
Arden bought lake house because she has no life.
Keaton absorbed.
When he proposed rentals, Dad initially laughed.
Then said:
“She’ll never know.”
That was permission.
Keaton built.
He knew wrong.
But inside family, wrong became clever if Dad approved.
He admitted.
His plea statement:
“I believed my sister’s property was available to us because our father said family ownership mattered more than deed.”
Then:
“I knew Arden did not agree. I avoided telling her because I wanted money.”
That second sentence preserved responsibility.
He turned over hidden backups.
One revealed another small issue.
Keaton had used rental photos to secure a $12,000 business credit line for Lake Voss Recreation by describing LLC as “exclusive manager” of property.
The lender did not hold lien on house, so no title risk.
But false business representation.
Included in federal conduct.
Then money.
He forfeited truck? Not entire; if purchased partly proceeds, maybe government seized $14k value. He sold truck, paid $18,000 restitution.
Parents could not pay for him under plea? They could but court wants. He used savings.
Sentence.
Federal guideline calculations affected amount, number victims, sophisticated means? Not overly. Keaton got 14 months prison plus 3 years supervised release? With cooperation, perhaps 10 months halfway/home detention. Let's choose 14 months custody, eligible for facility/community rules, plus restitution. He was young, no record.
Judge:
“You were not a child obeying father. You were adult who designed machinery of fraud.”
Correct.
Then:
“Your cooperation matters. So does your responsibility.”
Keaton served about eleven months with credits.
After release, he worked IT support.
Could no longer manage payment accounts? Not legally barred forever, but supervision monitored finances.
He completed.
Years later no new crimes.
But at this point relationship.
He wrote me:
I won’t ask you to visit.
I didn’t.
Then:
I am sorry I called your house empty.
That line surprised.
I knew you worked for it. I made your absence from it feel like permission because that made money easier.
