Chapter 15 - My Mother Takes The Plea

Elaine pleaded guilty.
She cried before court.
Not at me.
At reality.
Her statement was more honest than I expected.
“I copied my daughter’s key without permission.”
Then:
“I helped schedule people into her home when I knew she would say no.”
Then:
“I participated in using a false management authorization bearing her signature.”
She did not create, but knew.
Then:
“I accepted money.”
The prosecutor noted her role substantial but less technical.
Restitution.
She agreed to forfeit $31,200 traceable proceeds, though some already spent; payment plan and joint liability.
She also paid share of property repairs/insurance costs through restitution.
Sentence:
Five months home detention.
Three years probation.
No custodial prison due age, cooperation, no prior record, acceptance, and sentencing factors.
Some relatives called it nothing.
I did not.
Home detention for sixty something woman who built life around family status was consequence.
Felony conviction.
No travel.
Financial monitoring.
No contact unless I consent.
Then local trespass/property damage plea folded with federal? State dismissed some duplicative counts after federal sentencing, but mother paid broken lock damage and entered no-trespass order. Fine.
Mom wrote:
I am sorry I called you useless.
I did not remember saying it until I watched camera.
Then:
You were working at hospital while I was standing at your door trying to break into a house your work paid for.
That was a strong line.
Then:
I hated feeling like guest.
I turned that feeling into permission.
No request.
Then:
I miss you.
I cried for first time.
Missing did not equal reconciliation.
I replied through attorney:
I received letter. I am not ready for contact.
She respected.
May you like
That mattered.
Then Dad’s trial approached.
