Chapter 11 - Richard’s Version

Dad’s deposition became a performance.

He began calm.

Ended shouting.

“Who owns 418 Lakeview Point?”

“Arden.”

“Any interest you hold?”

“No legal interest.”

“Any trust?”

“No.”

“Any lease?”

“No.”

“Management agreement?”

“Oral.”

“With whom?”

“Arden.”

“Date?”

“Over years.”

“What exact words?”

“She said she wanted family to enjoy house.”

“Did she say rent to strangers?”

“She did not exclude.”

Sarah:

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“She would have said no.”

That ended oral authority.

Then fees.

“Why collect?”

“To maintain property.”

“Did you pay mortgage?”

“No.”

“Property taxes?”

“No.”

“Insurance?”

“No.”

“Utilities?”

“Occasionally internet upgrades.”

“Did Arden ask?”

“No.”

“Did you send accounting?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her income?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She didn’t need stress.”

Then personal transfers.

“What was $3,800 cruise payment?”

“Family vacation.”

“Was Arden on cruise?”

“No.”

“What was boat club?”

“I took guests boating.”

“Did Lake Voss Recreation own boat?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

“Club.”

Then Jennifer.

“You told injured guest you owned.”

“I said family owned.”

Release says owner Richard Voss.

“I was simplifying.”

Then forged consent.

“Did you know Keaton pasted Arden’s signature?”

“I knew he created authorization.”

“Did you tell him?”

“I said make it look professional.”

“Did Arden authorize?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because guests were nervous.”

“Why would they be nervous?”

“Because name on deed differed.”

He knew.

Then Memorial Day:

“Why tell relatives not to post?”

“Arden overreacts.”

“Meaning she did not know.”

“Yes.”

Then Friday notice.

“You received before arrival?”

“Yes.”

“Why go?”

“It was planned.”

“Why try force door?”

“I was angry.”

“Did you believe notice invalid?”

“I believed she would open.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

Then he said:

“She owes me.”

Sarah stopped.

“For what?”

“Everything.”

“Specify.”

“Thirty six years.”

I heard from video later.

“Raising her?”

“Yes.”

“Food?”

“Yes.”

“School?”

“Yes.”

“Clothes?”

“Yes.”

Sarah:

“Were these loans?”

“No.”

“Any agreement Arden would later repay by providing property?”

“No.”

“Then how does she owe?”

Dad’s face hardened.

“It’s what family does.”

There it was again.

Family as debt without contract.

Then he said:

“She always thought being nurse made her better.”

Sarah:

“Did she say?”

“No.”

“She bought house.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She stopped needing us.”

The same wound.

Then he admitted using rental money because his retirement income felt limited.

Keaton needed help.

Elaine liked trips.

Relatives enjoyed house.

Everybody benefited.

Except me.

He called that efficiency.

Then:

“Did you ever intend repay Arden?”

“If she needed.”

I needed consent, not charity.

Then criminal counsel stopped some answers.

But civil record enough.

Federal agents already had independent.

Then settlement attempt.

Dad offered deed? Not his. He offered $70k total restitution if all civil claims dismissed.

Sarah said scheme net $138,840 plus property wear, insurance costs, attorney fees, taxes.

We countered full accounting plus $160k.

No deal.

Then government moved.

Federal grand jury returned indictment months later.

Richard Voss.

Keaton Voss.

Elaine Voss.

Conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Multiple substantive wire fraud counts tied to specific interstate electronic rental payments and fabricated management authority.

Aggravated identity theft? Use of forged signature not necessarily means of identification could qualify, but mandatory severe. Avoid.

Maybe false statements? Keep conspiracy/wire fraud only.

State charges for attempted breaking/entering? Local prosecutor charged misdemeanor attempted trespass/property damage and false pretenses overlapping; coordinated to avoid duplicative sentencing.

Dad was arrested? He surrendered.

Keaton too.

Elaine.

No deck takedown.

No tasers.

The video prompt’s dramatic moment became evidence, not actual arrest.

Dad was released pending trial under conditions.

No contact with me.

No property access.

Passport.

Then local news finally used words:
