Chapter 9 - The Email Account
The fake Claire email account was created from Derek’s laptop.
That part was straightforward.
Recovery email:
Derek’s secondary Gmail.
He had not even hidden it well because he assumed nobody would investigate.
He sent lease messages pretending to be me.
He uploaded W 2.
License.
Bank statement.
He wrote the family responsibility letter.
Valerie conducted remote notary impersonation.
Derek stood behind her.
The notary recording eventually became evidence.
Audio:
Notary:
Ms. Morgan, please state full name.
Valerie:
Claire Elise Morgan.
My name.
Notary:
Date of birth?
She answered.
Address?
Answered.
Verification question:
Which of these addresses have you previously lived at?
Valerie looked off screen.
Derek whispered:
“Redmond.”
She selected.
There.
Direct participation.
The bank referred matter to King County prosecutors after police investigation matured.
Potential charges included identity theft, forgery, and attempted/actual financial fraud related offenses.
I did not track statutory numbers.
Lauren told me:
“You’re divorcing a person, not prosecuting a case.”
“Easy for you.”
“No. Necessary for you.”
Meanwhile, Evelyn’s role remained uncertain.
Messages showed Derek asking her:
Can you send Claire’s W 2 and ID scan?
Evelyn:
Why?
Derek:
She said she’ll cover Valerie housing but doesn’t want to deal with application.
Evelyn:
She told me 3k only.
My breath stopped.
Mom remembered my limit.
Derek:
She changed mind.
Evelyn:
When?
Derek:
Last night.
Evelyn:
She didn’t tell me.
Derek:
Because you two fight about money.
Evelyn:
True.
Then she sent files.
She had doubts.
Did not verify.
Later:
Evelyn:
Lease approved?
Derek:
Yes.
Evelyn:
Claire still hasn’t mentioned.
Derek:
Drop it.
Mom:
Fine.
That was negligence.
Willful avoidance.
Not necessarily conspiracy.
Then after HELOC transfer:
Evelyn:
Why did you send me 14?
Derek:
Repaying Valerie medical loan.
Evelyn:
From where?
Derek:
Our line.
Evelyn:
Claire agreed?
Derek:
Yes.
Evelyn:
Okay.
Again.
She accepted because convenient.
But another message changed things.
Two weeks later:
Evelyn:
Claire asked me today if Valerie needs housing help. She clearly doesn’t know.
Derek did not answer for eleven minutes.
Then:
Derek:
Do not say anything.
Mom:
What are you doing?
Derek:
Protecting everyone.
Mom:
Derek.
Derek:
She’ll find out after baby.
Mom:
I don’t like this.
There.
Mom knew by then.
Not necessarily about forged lease details.
She knew I did not know.
She still stayed silent.
Then she visited Harbor Crest nine times.
She helped decorate nursery.
She brought groceries.
She stood in hospital room and called me useful.
Her crime may have been silence more than paperwork.
Legally different.
Emotionally enormous.
Prosecutors ultimately did not charge Evelyn for lease/HELOC fraud because evidence did not establish beyond reasonable doubt that she knowingly aided the forged applications at the time she supplied documents and witness signature.
That would come later.
For now, she remained under investigation.
She called Lauren asking to “make peace.”
I refused.
Then Valerie’s attorney sent proposal.
She would admit affair and impersonation in civil divorce context if I agreed not to pursue restitution against her personally beyond bank claims.
Lauren laughed.
“No.”
I looked at proposal.
“What does she have?”
“Fear.”
“No. Why offer now?”
Lauren read again.
“She may be trying to separate herself from Derek.”
