Chapter 17 - Evan’s First Birthday

I did not attend Evan’s first birthday.

Mom invited me carefully through email.

No pressure, she wrote.

I said no.

Valerie was serving her sentence? Depending timing, maybe sentence short and completed by then. Let's say she had completed custodial portion by first birthday? If one year after birth, could be 60 days. Fine.

Valerie had completed custody and was on supervision.

Derek was serving his term and not present.

Evan turned one with Valerie and Evelyn.

I sent nothing.

Not because I blamed child.

Because sending a gift would reopen a relationship I was not ready to have.

Hannah asked:

“Do you feel guilty?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He’s innocent.”

“Does innocence create obligation?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I don’t know.”

I eventually donated to a local children’s shelter that week.

Not in Evan’s name.

Not substitute.

Just because I wanted generosity to remain mine rather than something betrayal poisoned.

A month later, Valerie sent me a letter through Lauren.

No request for money.

No photo.

Good.

She wrote:

I used to think you had everything because you had career, house, savings, Derek. I told myself taking from you was different because you could recover.

I read slowly.

Then:

I did not understand that I was making you pay for the fact that I felt behind.

There.

Jealousy.

Not infertility alone.

Not romance.

Status.

I did not reply.

Three months later, Mom asked whether she could see me for coffee.

I said yes.

Public.

Thirty minutes.

She did not mention Valerie until I did.

Good.

She asked:

“How is work?”

“Fine.”

“Condo?”

“Fine.”

“Are you dating?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

No judgment.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

“You’ve said.”

“I know.”

We drank coffee.

At end she asked hug.

I said no.

She nodded.

No tears.

No guilt.

That was progress.

The next coffee, I said yes.

Trust returned in teaspoons.

Valerie remained no contact.

May you like

That was different.

One person changing did not require every relationship reopening.
