Chapter 22 - Mom Learns to Ask

Evelyn changed slowly.
The first time she asked:
“Do you have bandwidth to help me with something?”
I almost laughed.
Not:
Claire, I need.
Not:
Valerie needs.
Do you have bandwidth?
“What?”
“Insurance portal.”
“Yes.”
I helped twenty minutes.
She thanked.
No hidden second request.
Progress.
Then one day:
“Valerie’s car needs repairs.”
My body tightened.
Mom immediately said:
“I’m not asking you to pay. I’m just telling you why I can’t meet Tuesday.”
I relaxed.
That was perhaps bigger than apology.
She recognized old pattern before I accused.
We moved from monthly coffee to occasional dinner.
She never brought Valerie without permission.
Never brought Evan as surprise.
Never asked me to attend birthdays.
Boundaries respected.
Did I trust fully?
No.
Did I love her?
Yes.
Both.
At Thanksgiving year four, Mom came to my condo.
Lauren and her husband came too.
We ordered food.
No performance.
Mom brought pie.
She asked before taking photos.
That mattered.
Halfway through dinner, she said:
“Your father would be proud of this place.”
I smiled.
“Because I bought it?”
“Because it’s yours.”
Not financially.
Emotionally.
May you like
Mine.
I understood.
