Chapter 24 - The Final Payment

Four years and eight months after hospital, the final restitution payment hit.

Not enormous.

A remaining $8,412 allocated to me through combined criminal/civil accounting.

Lauren emailed:

This closes your direct restitution balance.

I stared.

So much life summarized in transfer.

I called her.

“We’re done?”

“Your divorce closed years ago. Fraud judgments satisfied. Credit corrected. HELOC settled. Harbor Crest closed. Yes.”

“Valerie?”

“Completed obligations.”

“Derek?”

“Completed.”

“Any pending appeal?”

“No.”

“Mom?”

“Never charged.”

“I know.”

“No hidden file.”

I laughed.

“Lawyers shouldn’t say that.”

“Fine. No known pending matter.”

Better.

That night I opened EVIDENCE folder.

Thousands of pages.

Lease.

Bank records.

Screenshots.

Hospital notes.

Emails.

Court orders.

I did not delete everything.

Legal retention matters.

I moved final archive to encrypted external drive and cloud storage.

Then removed active folder from my phone.

I did not need Derek’s messages beside grocery list anymore.

I kept one thing visible.

The hospital gift bag.

Yes.

I had taken it from car months later.

The pale blue blanket remained unused.

For years it sat in closet.

I considered donating.

Couldn’t.

At final payment, I did.

Local family shelter.

Not to Evan.

May you like

Not symbolic punishment.

Just an object becoming useful in a way nobody had forced.
