Chapter 8 - The Baby’s Name

The baby was named Evan.

I learned through social media.

Valerie posted no father.

Just:

Welcome to the world, Evan Morgan.

Seven pounds, two ounces.

Perfect.

Comments poured in.

Mom.

Friends.

Cousins.

Derek did not publicly react.

Privately, phone records later showed he called Valerie seventeen times that day.

I did not blame Evan.

That mattered.

He was newborn.

No part of this belonged to him.

When relatives began calling me:

“Are you really cutting Valerie off when she just gave birth?”

I said:

“I am not discussing an infant.”

Nothing else.

No posts.

No exposing affair online.

No humiliating hospital pictures.

Lauren strongly approved.

“Judges like adults who behave like adults.”

“I’m not doing it for judge.”

“Even better.”

Derek filed request for temporary access to townhouse.

He claimed I had “abandoned marital residence.”

I had not changed locks.

He still lived there.

I stayed with Lauren voluntarily.

Court ordered temporary financial restraints preventing either of us from selling, transferring, hiding, or dissipating major marital assets outside ordinary expenses.

Good.

Derek’s access to joint account remained.

But fraud review limited unusual transfers.

My salary now went separately.

His salary stayed his.

Temporary support?

He requested none.

Smart.

He earned about $118,000.

I earned around $240,000 including bonuses.

He was not poor.

Valerie’s apartment was simply above what his income comfortably supported.

At first hearing, Derek’s lawyer implied I had always financed family lifestyle.

Lauren produced budgets.

I paid roughly sixty percent.

Derek forty.

Not “only good for funding our life.”

Normal unequal incomes.

Then Detective Foster called.

Valerie had retained criminal attorney.

No interview.

Derek too.

No surprise.

Search warrant for Derek’s work/personal phone? Investigators obtained court authorization based on fake email, notary video, bank evidence.

Data extraction took time.

The first important recovered message was between Derek and Valerie six months before Evan’s birth.

Valerie:

Claire said no to apartment help.

Derek:

I know.

Valerie:

Then we can’t get Harbor Crest.

Derek:

We can.

Valerie:

How?

Derek:

She doesn’t look at paperwork unless it’s work.

My stomach tightened.

Then:

Valerie:

I’m not pretending to be her.

Derek:

You already look enough like her on bad camera.

Valerie:

Not funny.

Derek:

It’s remote. Mom has her ID scan.

There.

Planning.

Mom’s document copy.

Valerie reluctant initially.

Derek pushing.

Then:

Valerie:

What if Claire finds out?

Derek:

She won’t until we’re ready.

Valerie:

Ready for what?

Derek:

After baby is born.

No answer.

A later message:

Derek:

Once Evan is here, Claire won’t blow up whole family. She hates conflict.

There.

My kindness again.

Not love.

Risk assessment.

He believed Evan’s existence would trap me emotionally.

I would not expose sister with newborn.

Would not embarrass Mom.

Would not risk marriage publicly.

So I would absorb.

That was the plan.

Then another:

Valerie:

And if she leaves you?

Derek:

She won’t.

Valerie:

How do you know?

Derek:

Because she thinks marriage means fixing things.

I stopped reading.

Lauren took phone from me.

“Enough.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“I need…”

“No. Your lawyer and detective can read every betrayal. You do not need to injure yourself with all of them.”

I hated that she was right.

Then Detective Foster said:

“There’s one more message you should know because it relates to motive.”

“What?”

Two months before Evan’s birth.

Derek:

After delivery, give it six weeks. Then I’ll tell Claire we need separation.

Valerie:

What about apartment and bills?

Derek:

She’ll keep paying through divorce unless she wants to look cruel.

My sister answered:

She will.

Not:

I hope.

May you like

She will.

Everyone had built their future on the certainty that I would rather be used than be called cruel.
