Chapter 24 - The Brother Ariel Never Asked For

Ariel was nine when she understood Noah was her half-brother.

We had never hidden.

We used age-appropriate language.

At nine, she finally connected.

“So Daddy is Noah’s daddy too?”

“Yes.”

“And Clara is Noah’s mommy.”

“Yes.”

“And Clara was Grandpa Richard’s wife.”

“Yes.”

She stared at me.

“That is messy.”

“Extremely.”

“Is Noah bad?”

“No.”

“Why would he be?”

“Because everything happened because of him.”

I stopped.

“No.”

“Mom?”

“Nothing happened because of Noah. Adults made choices before he was born. He did not cause any of it.”

She nodded.

That mattered.

Glen asked whether Ariel wanted occasional sibling time during his parenting weekends.

She did.

Not always.

No forced bond.

At first they played like acquaintances.

Then Noah learned Minecraft and became useful.

By thirteen and ten, they argued like siblings about controllers.

Clara and I did not attend those visits together.

We did not become blended-family friends.

Glen handled.

Boundaries allowed children relationship without demanding women who betrayed each other perform harmony.

Richard did not become Noah’s grandfather.

He sent one birthday book each year after their park meeting.

Nothing more.

No title.

May you like

No expectation.

That was his chosen kindness.
