Chapter 19 - Ariel’s Father Went Away
Explaining incarceration to a four-year-old was harder than divorce.
We did not say:
Daddy is bad.
We said:
“Daddy broke important rules about money and work, and a judge decided he has to stay somewhere else for a while.”
Ariel asked:
“Jail?”
Children hear things.
“Yes.”
“Because Clara?”
“Because choices Daddy made.”
“Did I make him?”
“No.”
“Because phone?”
“No. Finding phone helped adults learn truth, but Daddy made choices before that.”
That distinction mattered.
She carried no burden for exposing him.
Glen had scheduled video calls.
Then in-person visits under facility rules when appropriate.
I did not withhold out of anger.
Rachel warned:
“Unless unsafe, support child’s relationship.”
He had not harmed Ariel physically.
He had involved her in secrecy.
He apologized directly in age-appropriate words.
“I should never have asked you to keep secrets from Mommy.”
Ariel said:
“I told.”
“I’m glad.”

He cried after call.
So did I.
