Chapter 14 - Clara Gave Birth

Clara gave birth at thirty-eight weeks and two days.
A boy.
Healthy.
Seven pounds one ounce.
She named him Noah.
I learned from Dad.
He had not attended delivery.
Glen had.
That fact told me something before any test.
But not certainty.
Paternity testing was arranged through court with consent after birth because Richard had formally challenged presumed paternity in divorce proceedings.
No spectacle.
No family gathered in clinic.
No screaming.
Just certified laboratory process.
Nine days later, Dad called.
I knew before he spoke.
“It’s Glen.”
I sat down.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Legally admissible?”
“Yes.”
He laughed once.
A broken sound.
“I spent seven months thinking maybe there was still a chance.”
“I know.”
“What do I do with that?”
“I don’t know.”
He cried.
I let him.
Then he said:
“Are you okay?”
I looked toward backyard where Ariel was drawing chalk suns on patio.
“No.”
“Me neither.”
Paternity result changed legal issues.
Richard was adjudicated not Noah’s father.
The marital presumption was rebutted.
No child-support obligation.
No automatic inheritance from Richard.
His pending estate transfers had never been completed.
Clara could not claim them for Noah.
Glen became legal father.
He acknowledged paternity.
That created support obligations and parental rights.
No one blamed Noah.

Not once in any court paper I approved.
He had entered a mess he did not create.
