Chapter 6 - The Brother beneath the City

Vincent had imagined Luca’s death for ten years.

He imagined the burned vehicle.

The ring recovered from the body.

The coffin no one opened.

The brother who left him alone inside the Moretti family.

Now Luca sat inside a wheelchair beneath the hospital, alive and restrained by the man who certified his death.

Vincent did not move toward him.

Arthur wanted emotion to shorten distance and weaken judgment.

“Release Luca.”

“Give me the token.”

“No.”

Arthur smiled.

“Then your brother returns to death.”

Luca looked at Vincent.

“Do not negotiate with my body.”

The sentence carried old Moretti pride, but also exhaustion.

Emma stood behind Rachel and Gabriel.

Bear remained in front of her.

Arthur pointed toward the locket.

“That child controls every identity connected to the twelve families.”

“She is eight,” Vincent said.

“She is a biological key.”

“She is a person.”

“People become property when systems recognize blood.”

“You built the system.”

“My father built the first version. Your father expanded it. Thomas Carter exposed it. Luca attempted to destroy it.”

Luca closed his eyes.

Arthur continued.

“Elena hid the Carter child. Gabriel accepted a death identity. Rachel disappeared. Every one of them used my work while condemning me.”

“You sold death certificates.”

“I sold continuity.”

“You stole lives.”

“I protected power from chaotic inheritance.”

Arthur believed the system created order.

That belief allowed every cruelty inside it.

Naomi Reed positioned federal agents at both corridor entrances.

Dr. Pierce stood beside Arthur, trapped between loyalty and escape.

Lena pointed toward a medical line attached to Luca’s arm.

“He is receiving something.”

Arthur tightened his grip near the weapon.

“One move and the dose finishes.”

Vincent addressed Dr. Pierce.

“You know what is inside that line.”

Samuel’s face had turned gray.

“It maintains sedation.”

Lena examined the monitor.

“It is slowing his heart.”

Samuel looked toward Arthur.

“You said he remained stable.”

Arthur did not answer.

The doctor understood that loyalty would not protect him.

He reached toward the infusion control.

Arthur turned.

Luca moved at the same moment.

He struck the wheelchair against Arthur’s knee.

The weapon shifted.

Bear lunged.

Vincent crossed the distance and drove Arthur into the elevator wall.

Federal agents seized the weapon.

Samuel shut the infusion.

Lena reached Luca.

His heart rhythm dropped.

The corridor filled with medical commands.

Emma stood frozen.

Rachel pulled her close.

Gabriel covered her view without lying about what happened.

“Luca is alive. The doctors are helping.”

Arthur struggled beneath the officers.

“You need me to stop the registry.”

Vincent looked at the black token.

“No. We need the people you trapped inside it.”

Arthur laughed.

“The registry contains more than victims. It contains judges, police chiefs, doctors, and every family member who purchased a second life. Release it publicly and the city collapses.”

“Then we separate truth from revenge.”

“You cannot.”

“You could not. That does not mean no one can.”

The registry core occupied three underground rooms.

Server towers held identities, property links, recordings, blood records, and biometric profiles.

A private system mirrored parts of the official city network.

Arthur could create documents that passed initial review because his people worked inside public offices.

Destroying the servers would erase evidence and harm victims whose real identities existed only there.

Publishing everything would expose children, witnesses, and protected patients.

Vincent transferred control to a temporary independent team including federal investigators, victim advocates, technical experts, and court observers.

He gave up Moretti access.

Marco questioned the decision.

“This system contains every Moretti weakness.”

“It also contains every Moretti crime.”

“Our enemies will use it.”

“Then we stop treating victims as protection for us.”

The choice weakened Vincent’s organization.

He made it anyway.

Luca stabilized after emergency treatment.

Elena remained beside him.

Rachel and Gabriel stayed with Emma in a protected family room.

Bear received food and slept across the doorway.

Arthur entered federal custody without a final determination of every crime.

Dr. Pierce began cooperating.

Lena’s restraints and medical record were preserved.

The hospital continued operating under independent leadership.

Patients did not lose care because its director participated in wrongdoing.

The hidden identity wing closed.

Vincent sat beside Luca after doctors allowed brief contact.

His brother looked older than thirty six.

“What happened to you?”

“Arthur kept me useful.”

“For what?”

“My blood opened Moretti records. My voice approved transfers. My face appeared in messages.”

“Why did he declare you dead?”

“I tried to give Thomas Carter the registry map.”

“Did Thomas receive it?”

“Part.”

“Is Emma your daughter?”

Luca looked toward the glass wall where the child slept against Rachel.

“Yes.”

“Did you know she survived?”

“Not until Arthur showed me photographs.”

“Why did Rachel believe you died?”

“Because Elena told her.”

Vincent turned toward Elena.

She remained near the door.

“Why?”

“Luca asked me.”

Luca closed his eyes.

“I thought Rachel would run farther if she believed no one came behind her.”

Again, secrecy called protection.

Again, another person carried the cost.

Rachel entered after hearing enough.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“I gave birth alone.”

“Yes.”

“I gave Emma to Gabriel because I thought every person connected to you would be killed.”

“I know.”

“You do not know.”

Luca accepted the anger.

He did not ask for immediate access to Emma.

“I will tell her only what she wants to hear.”

Rachel looked toward Gabriel.

The man who raised Emma stood near the child’s chair.

No blood record could remove him.

Emma woke before dawn.

She approached Luca slowly.

Bear walked beside her.

“Are you the person who made me?”

Luca answered.

“Yes.”

“Gabriel is my father.”

“Yes.”

“Rachel is my mother.”

“Yes.”

“Elena is Elena.”

A small smile touched his face.

“Yes.”

“And Vincent?”

Luca looked at his brother.

“Vincent is the man who opened the vault.”

Emma considered that.

“Not uncle?”

“Only if you choose.”

She touched the locket.

“Did you put the key inside?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Luca’s expression changed.

“Elena did.”

Elena shook her head.

“I placed the brass key. Not the black token.”

Everyone looked toward the locket.

The token had been hidden behind Elena’s photograph before Emma escaped.

Someone else accessed the locket while all four adults were inside the quiet house.

The hospital registry displayed the token’s creation record.

Authorized by: Emma Carter.

Date: two years before Emma was born.

The identity system had reserved her blood key before her existence.

Arthur had inherited a plan older than the child.

Continue to the next part: The registry reveals that Emma’s identity was designed years before her birth to control both the Carter and Moretti bloodlines.
