Chapter 5 - The Hospital of False Names

Moretti Memorial Hospital occupied an entire city block.

Vincent’s father funded it after surviving a shooting.

The public saw charity.

The vault records showed another purpose.

The hospital generated medical opinions for guardianships, deaths, and identity transfers connected to the twelve families.

Some doctors provided real care.

A smaller group served Arthur’s registry.

Vincent entered through the emergency entrance with Emma, Bear, Rachel, Gabriel, Marco, federal investigator Naomi Reed, and attorney Lydia Grant.

Independent cameras recorded every step.

Vincent surrendered his firearm before crossing the security line.

He refused to give Arthur an image of an armed mafia boss invading a hospital.

Marco and official officers remained armed under clear authority.

Emma held Bear’s collar.

The dog wore a temporary medical vest so staff would not separate them.

The admission desk displayed no Elena Rossi.

It displayed Elena Moretti.

Spouse: Vincent Moretti.

Capacity status: severe cognitive impairment.

Emergency guardian: Arthur Vale.

Vincent placed his identification on the counter.

“I never married Elena.”

The clerk looked frightened.

“The registry says otherwise.”

“The registry is false.”

“We cannot ignore legal records.”

Lydia placed a court preservation order beside the screen.

“You can preserve the patient and stop transfer until identity is independently verified.”

The clerk called administration.

The hospital director, Dr. Samuel Pierce, arrived with security.

He had worked for Vincent for twelve years.

“Vincent, this should be handled privately.”

“That is how Arthur survived.”

“Patients will panic.”

“Then protect patients. Do not protect records.”

Samuel looked at the cameras.

“You brought press into a medical building.”

“I brought independent witnesses into a building my family used to manufacture deaths.”

The accusation reached staff, patients, and security officers.

Some looked shocked.

Others looked away too quickly.

Naomi Reed presented the vault ledger and requested access to Elena and Lena.

Samuel refused until federal agents displayed warrants connected to kidnapping, identity fraud, and unlawful medical detention.

The elevator opened.

Dr. Lena Ward emerged on a stretcher with restraints across her wrists.

She was conscious.

“Do not let them move Elena,” she shouted.

A nurse attempted to sedate her.

Naomi stopped the injection.

“Who ordered medication?”

“Dr. Pierce.”

Samuel’s face changed.

“I ordered calming support after she became violent.”

Lena looked at Vincent.

“I found Elena in the surgical wing. She is not incapable. They are taking bone marrow and blood.”

The black token required living biological material.

Arthur planned to duplicate Emma’s access without keeping her present.

Emma held the locket against her chest.

Bear growled at Samuel.

A hospital alarm began.

The registry announced:

Emergency contamination protocol.

All doors locked.

The system sealed public exits.

Arthur’s voice entered the speakers.

“Vincent brought a child into a violent organized dispute. Security will remove her for protection.”

Hospital guards approached.

Vincent raised empty hands.

“She stays with her independent advocate.”

Arthur’s system produced a guardianship order.

Emma Carter declared endangered.

Temporary guardian: Dr. Samuel Pierce.

Rachel shouted:

“I am her mother.”

The screen changed.

Rachel Carter status: deceased.

Gabriel stepped beside her.

His record appeared.

Gabriel Voss status: deceased.

Vincent’s profile changed next.

Armed psychiatric threat.

Emergency detention authorized.

Arthur had converted living witnesses into dead people and dangerous people within seconds.

Some guards hesitated.

Others followed the screen.

Marco activated the external broadcast.

The hospital displays now showed the original vault records beside the new changes.

Every false status appeared with its creation time.

Patients saw living people marked dead.

Staff saw orders generated after the confrontation began.

The system lost its appearance of ordinary authority.

One guard lowered his weapon.

Samuel shouted:

“Follow hospital protocol.”

The guard answered:

“Which protocol? The one that killed them while they stand here?”

The balance shifted.

Vincent looked at Emma.

“Where does the black token go?”

Gabriel pointed toward the surgical wing.

“Registry core beneath operating room seven.”

They moved through a service corridor.

Bear ran ahead, then stopped near a closed door.

He scratched the floor.

Emma knelt.

“He smells Elena.”

Marco forced the door under the federal warrant.

Elena lay inside a treatment room connected to blood collection equipment.

Her face was pale.

Her wrists were restrained.

She opened her eyes when Vincent entered.

“You took your time.”

The sentence sounded exactly like the woman he remembered.

He moved toward her.

Emma reached the bed first.

“Elena.”

Elena lifted one hand toward the girl.

“Little Bird.”

Gabriel cut the restraints.

Rachel disconnected the equipment under Lena’s direction.

Vincent looked at Elena.

“Why did you disappear?”

“Because Luca asked me to protect Emma if he failed.”

“Is he alive?”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the ceiling camera.

“Arthur wants you asking that more than anything.”

She had no time to explain.

The floor beneath operating room seven began opening.

A hidden elevator descended toward the registry core.

Arthur was leaving.

Vincent placed the black token into the control panel before the elevator sealed.

The doors reopened.

Arthur stood inside with Dr. Pierce.

Between them was a man in a wheelchair.

His face remained partially covered.

Emma stepped closer.

The man lifted his head.

He had Vincent’s eyes.

Rachel whispered:

“Luca.”

Vincent’s brother was alive.

A medical collar held him against the chair.

Arthur placed a weapon near Luca’s neck.

“Give me the token.”

Emma tightened her hold on Bear.

Luca looked at her.

His voice barely worked.

May you like

“Do not give him your name.”

Continue to the next part: Vincent finds his brother alive beneath the hospital while Arthur demands Emma’s identity in exchange for Luca’s life.
