Chapter 3 - The Vault beneath Saint Victor

Saint Victor Bank had closed its public doors twenty years earlier.

The marble building remained beneath Moretti ownership, but no customers entered and no employees worked above the first underground level.

Vincent arrived before sunrise with Marco, two security teams, a forensic accountant, and a court observer secretly loyal to no Moretti family.

He refused to open the vault alone.

Arthur wanted darkness and private decisions.

Vincent brought witnesses.

Emma remained at the safe house with Lena and Bear. A live secure line connected her room to Vincent’s phone.

She could end the connection whenever she wanted.

The brass key opened an elevator panel hidden behind a statue of Saint Victor.

The elevator descended beneath the known bank vault.

A steel corridor waited below.

At its end stood a round door bearing the winged lion symbol from Elena’s locket.

The lock contained three openings.

One for the brass key.

One for a blood sample.

One for a voice command.

Arthur’s message had said the vault required living Carter blood.

Vincent refused to use Emma.

The bank archive listed another authorized Carter.

Thomas Carter.

Declared dead.

A sealed sample remained inside the vault system from twenty years earlier.

The machine accepted the stored blood record.

The brass key turned.

The voice command prompt illuminated.

Vincent spoke the phrase engraved beneath the locket photograph.

“Her father lives.”

The door opened.

Inside were no piles of cash.

Metal shelves held files, evidence boxes, film reels, and identity ledgers.

The first cabinet contained death certificates.

Gabriel Voss.

Elena Rossi.

Thomas Carter.

Rachel Carter.

Vincent Moretti.

His own name stopped him.

The certificate listed a date six months in the future.

Cause: organized crime retaliation.

Body identification: Arthur Vale.

Beneficiary authority: Moretti Continuity Council.

Arthur had prepared Vincent’s death as carefully as Gabriel’s.

Marco opened another file.

“Every senior Moretti figure has one.”

Deaths waiting for bodies.

The council could activate an identity whenever someone became inconvenient.

The second cabinet contained birth records.

Children assigned to Moretti families.

Some names appeared twice under different parents.

Emma Carter appeared under three records.

First:

Mother: Rachel Carter.

Father: unknown.

Second:

Mother: Elena Rossi.

Father: Gabriel Voss.

Third:

Mother: Elena Rossi.

Father: Vincent Moretti.

All three used the same infant footprint.

Someone had built multiple legal histories around one child.

Vincent photographed each page without selecting one as truth.

The third cabinet held the twelve fathers ledger.

It documented how the city’s founding families acquired ports, hospitals, courts, and property through forced transfers.

The Moretti family appeared on thirty pages.

Vincent’s grandfather bribed officials.

His father ordered disappearances.

Arthur’s father manufactured deaths and guardianships.

Vincent had inherited power built on documents as much as violence.

He had called himself different because he avoided certain crimes.

The vault showed that his organization still benefited from them.

The forensic accountant found current accounts funded by properties taken from families declared dead or incapable.

The money supported businesses Vincent considered legitimate.

Ignorance did not clean ownership.

A sound moved behind the shelves.

Marco drew his weapon.

A woman stepped into the open with both hands raised.

She wore a dark coat and carried a medical case.

Vincent recognized her from old photographs.

Rachel Carter.

Thomas Carter’s missing daughter.

She looked at the brass key.

“You brought Emma here?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Are you her mother?”

Rachel lowered her hands.

“Yes.”

“Which record is real?”

“The one no one has shown you yet.”

She opened the medical case.

Inside was a blood card, an original hospital bracelet, and a photograph of herself holding a newborn Emma.

“Elena helped me hide her.”

“Why did Gabriel raise her?”

“Because Arthur killed Thomas and came for me.”

“Gabriel was dead.”

“Gabriel agreed to become dead.”

Rachel explained that Thomas Carter investigated the twelve families as a federal financial crimes officer. He discovered Arthur Vale’s identity system.

Arthur arranged Thomas’s death.

Rachel survived the same attack and gave birth months later.

Elena and Gabriel helped her disappear.

When Rachel became too ill from injuries and medication exposure, Gabriel became Emma’s daily father.

Elena became her teacher and protector.

“Who is Emma’s biological father?”

Rachel looked toward the vault door.

“A man Arthur has been trying to erase for nine years.”

“Name.”

Before she answered, the emergency lights turned red.

Marco checked the corridor.

“The elevator stopped.”

A voice entered through hidden speakers.

Arthur Vale.

“Rachel always did enjoy arriving before the truth.”

Vincent raised his gun toward the ceiling.

Arthur laughed.

“The vault will seal in sixty seconds. Leave the ledger and bring Rachel to the elevator.”

Vincent looked at Marco.

“Can we stop the lock?”

“Not from here.”

Rachel placed the medical case inside Vincent’s hands.

“Take this.”

“You are coming.”

“If the vault seals with all of us inside, Emma has no one.”

“You are her mother.”

“And Gabriel is her father.”

Vincent understood what she was asking.

Do not reduce family to blood because the documents demanded it.

Marco found a maintenance panel.

“Manual release requires someone at the inner lever.”

The lever sat across the chamber.

The person pulling it would remain behind when the outer door closed.

Rachel moved first.

Vincent caught her arm.

“No.”

“You do not even know me.”

“I know Arthur wants you separated from the records.”

Rachel looked at him.

“He wants the blood card.”

“Then we take both.”

Marco’s men tied a cable around the inner lever and fed it through the door mechanism. The outer team pulled as the countdown reached ten.

The lever moved.

The door slowed.

Everyone crossed the threshold.

The cable snapped.

The steel door closed behind them.

Rachel had escaped with the ledger.

Arthur had expected sacrifice.

Vincent chose engineering and witnesses.

At the elevator, they found a black envelope.

Inside was a current photograph of Emma sleeping at the safe house.

The timestamp came from two minutes earlier.

Vincent called Lena.

No answer.

Marco called the security team.

Static.

The safe house had been breached while Vincent opened the vault.

Then Emma’s voice entered the secure line.

“Vincent.”

“I am here.”

“They took Lena.”

“Where is Bear?”

A growl sounded near the phone.

“With me.”

“Lock the lower room.”

“I cannot.”

“Why?”

“Gabriel is standing outside the door.”

Vincent looked at Rachel.

Her face went white.

Gabriel had reached Emma.

The father everyone trusted may have entered through the same security breach that took Lena.

Continue to the next part: Gabriel returns to Emma while Vincent discovers that someone inside the safe house helped the attackers enter.
