Chapter 4 - The Father Who Returned

Vincent reached the safe house eleven minutes later.

The outer guards were alive but unconscious.

A medical gas had entered through the garage ventilation system.

The security logs showed an internal override.

Authorized user: Gabriel Voss.

Gabriel still possessed Moretti access from six years earlier.

No one had removed a dead man from the system.

Vincent entered the lower corridor with his weapon lowered but ready.

Bear stood outside Emma’s room.

The dog did not attack Gabriel.

That mattered.

Gabriel knelt beside Emma with one hand against her cheek.

He looked thinner than the photograph Arthur displayed. A scar crossed the side of his neck. Blood darkened his shirt.

Emma threw both arms around him.

“You came back.”

“I promised.”

Vincent stopped several feet away.

Rachel entered behind him.

Gabriel saw her.

Every part of his face changed.

“Rachel.”

Emma looked between them.

“You know her?”

Gabriel stood slowly.

“She is your mother.”

The words did not produce immediate joy.

Emma tightened her grip around him.

Rachel remained near the wall.

“I am not asking you to come to me.”

Emma stared.

“Why did you leave?”

Rachel answered without hiding behind danger.

“I was injured. I was afraid. I believed Gabriel and Elena could keep you safer than I could.”

“You never came back.”

“No.”

“Did you stop loving me?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because fear became easier than returning.”

Gabriel looked at Rachel but did not defend her.

Emma turned toward him.

“Are you still my father?”

“Yes.”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer belonged to all of them.

Vincent addressed Gabriel.

“Where is Lena?”

“Arthur took her.”

“You entered with him?”

“I followed his team through the service tunnel.”

“Your access disabled my guards.”

“I disabled the locks because Arthur had explosives near Emma’s room.”

“You could have warned us.”

“I did not know which Moretti channel Arthur controlled.”

Vincent could not dismiss the concern.

Arthur had spent decades inside the organization.

“Why did you send Emma to the alley instead of coming to me?”

“I was trapped at the quiet house.”

“You escaped.”

“After Elena surrendered.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Gabriel removed a small drive from his pocket.

“Elena traded herself for Emma’s path out.”

Arthur allowed Gabriel to believe he could free both women. When the house came under attack, Elena opened the cellar route and placed the locket around Emma’s neck.

Gabriel remained behind to delay the armed men.

He was captured.

Arthur staged the live message, then moved him during the vault opening.

Gabriel escaped when Rachel triggered a fire alarm inside Saint Victor Bank.

The events overlapped because Arthur wanted each person questioning the others.

“What does the key open beyond the vault?” Vincent asked.

Gabriel looked toward the locket.

“The hidden compartment contains two keys.”

Emma touched the silver chain.

“I gave you one.”

“The second is inside the photograph frame.”

Vincent opened the locket.

A flat black wafer sat behind Elena’s image.

It did not resemble a traditional key.

Marco scanned it.

“Encrypted biometric token.”

Gabriel nodded.

“The brass key opens records. The black key opens control.”

“Control of what?”

“The city identity registry Arthur built beneath the civil system.”

Births.

Deaths.

Marriages.

Guardianships.

Property access.

The hidden system allowed Arthur to create legal people, remove living people, and move assets through identities no court knew were false.

The twelve families used it.

Some believed Arthur provided ordinary privacy.

Others knowingly purchased deaths and heirs.

Emma’s identity had been copied because her blood connected Thomas Carter’s federal evidence to Moretti vault access.

“Who is her biological father?” Vincent asked again.

Gabriel looked at Emma.

“That answer belongs to her.”

“I want to know,” she said.

Gabriel removed a folded paper from inside his shirt.

A genetic report.

Father probability: Vincent Moretti, inconclusive due to shared family markers.

Alternative match: Luca Moretti.

Vincent’s younger brother.

Luca died ten years earlier during the Moretti civil war.

Or Vincent believed he died.

Gabriel continued.

“Rachel and Luca worked together during the Carter investigation.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Emma looked toward Vincent.

“Is Luca my father?”

Rachel answered.

“Yes.”

Vincent felt the room shift.

Luca had been reckless, brilliant, and determined to leave the family.

He disappeared after accusing their father of using the identity registry.

Vincent found a burned vehicle and a body wearing Luca’s ring.

Arthur confirmed the remains.

Another death controlled by Arthur.

“Is Luca alive?” Vincent asked.

Rachel looked at Gabriel.

“We do not know.”

Arthur had used shared Moretti genetics to make Vincent appear as Emma’s possible father.

The lie was strong enough to manipulate him while remaining difficult to disprove.

Emma sat beside Bear.

“My father is Gabriel.”

Rachel lowered her head.

“Yes.”

“And Luca is the person who made me.”

“Yes.”

“And Vincent is his brother.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at Vincent.

“What does that make you?”

He answered carefully.

“Whatever you decide after we survive.”

An alarm sounded inside the house.

Marco checked the security panel.

A message had entered from Lena’s medical bracelet.

She remained alive.

Location: Moretti Memorial Hospital.

The hospital was controlled by Vincent’s foundation.

Arthur had taken her into the building named after Vincent’s father.

A second alert appeared.

Patient admitted under the name Elena Moretti.

Arthur planned to move Elena through the same hospital.

The registry could declare Elena married to Vincent, incapable, or dead.

Gabriel looked at the screen.

“He is activating the black key without the token.”

“How?”

“He has Elena’s blood.”

Rachel turned toward Emma.

“The token requires Carter blood and Moretti blood together.”

Emma carried both through Rachel and Luca.

Arthur needed her alive.

The armed men in the alley had avoided killing her because her body opened control.

Vincent closed his hand around the black wafer.

“We reach the hospital before he uses her.”

Gabriel stopped him.

“If Arthur activates the registry, every officer, doctor, and judge may see us as kidnappers.”

Vincent looked at Emma.

“Then we bring evidence they cannot ignore.”

Rachel lifted the twelve fathers ledger.

Gabriel lifted the medical records.

Marco opened the live camera archive.

Vincent did not take only armed men.

He called prosecutors, federal investigators, independent doctors, and reporters who had survived Moretti intimidation.

For the first time, he planned to enter one of his own institutions with witnesses powerful enough to challenge him too.

Continue to the next part: Vincent prepares to expose his own family’s crimes in order to stop Arthur from rewriting Elena’s identity inside Moretti Memorial Hospital.
