Chapter 9 - The Children Trained to Protect Their Captor

Water rose to Roman’s chest within seconds.
The steel gate behind them would not move.
The tunnel ahead ended at another sealed door.
Lucy reached beneath the water and found a maintenance panel.
“Halcyon trained us to escape if enemies entered.”
“Can you open it?” Clara asked.
“I can trigger the emergency release.”
Roman held the flashlight while Lucy entered a six digit code.
Rejected.
She tried another.
Rejected.
Water reached Clara’s shoulders.
Lucy’s breathing accelerated.
“Sebastian changed it.”
Roman looked at the mechanism.
“What happens if we cut the power?”
“The front gate opens, but the pumps stop.”
“We drown either way.”
Clara placed one hand on Lucy’s shoulder.
“Think about what he taught you.”
“He said panic makes people stupid.”
“What did you teach yourself?”
Lucy looked at her.
“That he lies.”
She entered the date Michael was first imprisoned.
The panel flashed green.
The forward door opened.
Water carried them into a service chamber.
Roman pulled Clara upright.
Lucy coughed and pushed wet hair from her face.
“You knew he would use your father’s pain as a code,” Clara said.
“He uses things he thinks belong to him.”
They climbed into the estate.
A group of children waited in the corridor holding firearms.
The oldest appeared fifteen.
The youngest was eight.
Their hands shook.
A boy ordered Roman to drop his weapon.
Lucy stepped forward.
“Ethan.”
The boy stared at her.
“You betrayed Grandfather.”
“He lied to us.”
“He said outsiders would destroy Halcyon and send us back to people who did not want us.”
Clara spoke carefully.
“Some of you may not have been abandoned.”
“Be quiet.”
“You were shown documents.”
“They had signatures.”
“Halcyon forged mine.”
The children looked toward Lucy.
She lowered her weapon.
“My father is alive.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“They said he sold you.”
“He spent thirteen years refusing to give them the key.”
A younger girl began crying.
“My mother signed the papers.”
“Maybe,” Lucy said. “Or maybe they wanted you to believe she did.”
The children slowly lowered their guns.
One remained aimed at Roman.
Ethan struggled between fear and obedience.
Roman holstered his own weapon.
“You can shoot me. Sebastian will praise you. Then he will give you another person to shoot tomorrow.”
Ethan’s arms trembled.
“What happens if I stop?”
“You discover who you are without his orders.”
The rifle lowered.
Lucy directed the children toward the lake tunnel, where rescue teams waited beyond the disabled gate.
Roman, Clara, and two trusted men continued upstairs.
In the medical suite, Dr. Shaw prepared Isabella for surgery.
Sebastian lay nearby connected to monitoring equipment.
His skin had turned gray.
Roman entered with his weapon raised.
“Step away from her.”
Dr. Shaw froze.
Sebastian smiled weakly.
“You always arrive after women sacrifice themselves for you.”
Isabella opened her eyes.
“Roman.”
“I’m here.”
Sebastian looked toward Clara.
“Julian’s daughter.”
“You murdered him.”
“He chose betrayal.”
“He chose to stop you.”
“He chose death.”
Clara approached the control panel beside Isabella.
Dr. Shaw reached toward a syringe.
Roman aimed at her.
“Touch it and die.”
Lucy entered behind them.
Sebastian’s expression changed.
“You were told to remain with the children.”
“I released them.”
“You destroyed your future.”
“No. I destroyed yours.”
Sebastian began laughing.
“You think Halcyon is a building? A council? A ledger? It survives because powerful people require what it provides.”
Roman disconnected Isabella’s restraints.
“Then we expose everyone who required it.”
“You cannot expose your own name without losing everything.”
“I would rather lose an empire than inherit your cage.”
Sebastian looked toward Clara.
“And you? Will you let him destroy the wealth that could give Lucy every advantage?”
Clara took her daughter’s hand.
“She already knows what advantages built on captivity cost.”
Sirens approached the estate.
Dr. Shaw suddenly moved.
She injected something into Sebastian’s intravenous line.
His eyes widened.
“What did you do?”
“You were going to blame every failure on me,” she said.
His monitors began alarming.
Roman seized her wrist.
“What was in it?”
“A sedative.”
Sebastian convulsed.
“More than a sedative.”
She smiled.
“Halcyon taught me to eliminate compromised assets.”
Sebastian collapsed.
Roman called for medical teams.
Clara stared at him.
“You are trying to save him?”
“He answers publicly for what he did.”
Emergency crews entered.
Sebastian remained alive but unconscious.
Dr. Shaw was arrested.
Isabella was stabilized.
The children left Black Harbor.
For the first time, Halcyon’s membership ledger reached independent federal prosecutors and international journalists simultaneously.
Judges resigned.
Police commanders vanished.
Executives denied everything.
Arrests began before sunrise.
Roman believed the organization was finally breaking.
Then Lorenzo called from the secure hospital.
His voice was weak.
“You need to leave Black Harbor.”
“Why?”
“The ledger has a second encryption layer.”
“What does it contain?”
“Halcyon’s original founder.”
“Sebastian founded it.”
“No.”
Roman looked toward Clara and Lucy.
“Who did?”
Lorenzo spoke a name.
May you like
Evelyn Bennett.
Continue to the next part: Roman returns to confront Evelyn after evidence identifies her as Halcyon’s original architect, but Clara discovers the name may have been planted to hide someone even closer to Roman.
