Chapter 5 - The Daughter Who Never Died

Clara sat completely still.

“I have never had a daughter.”

Dominic watched her through the bars.

“You gave birth when you were seventeen.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Roman saw the truth before she spoke.

Clara turned toward her mother.

“No.”

Evelyn began shaking.

“You were very young.”

“No.”

“You were sick after the delivery.”

“I was never pregnant.”

“They gave you medication.”

Clara stood so quickly the chair fell behind her.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“You met a boy when we lived in Milwaukee. Halcyon found us. They knew who you were before I did.”

Fragments moved across Clara’s face.

A summer she remembered only in pieces.

Three months inside a church residence.

Constant nausea.

Evelyn telling her she had pneumonia.

A hospital room blurred by medication.

Pain she had been told came from emergency abdominal surgery.

“You told me my appendix ruptured.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“Where is my child?”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“I thought she died.”

“Did you see her body?”

“No.”

“Did a doctor tell you?”

“Yes.”

“Which doctor?”

Evelyn’s silence answered.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw had delivered the baby.

Clara gripped the table.

“Who was the father?”

“A boy named Michael Reed.”

Roman knew the name.

Michael Reed was the son of a federal prosecutor who investigated Halcyon nineteen years earlier. Michael disappeared shortly after Clara entered the church residence.

His body was never found.

The relationship may have united two bloodlines Halcyon wanted to control.

Dominic leaned against the bars.

“The girl is thirteen. Her name is Lucy.”

Clara faced him.

“Where is she?”

“At a Halcyon academy outside Lake Forest.”

“What academy?”

“A private boarding school for children whose parents are considered inconvenient.”

Roman unlocked the cell and dragged Dominic forward.

“Address.”

Dominic laughed.

“If I give you the address, Sebastian knows I betrayed him.”

“You already have.”

“No. Until now, I have only failed.”

Roman pressed him against the wall.

“Address.”

Dominic finally gave coordinates.

Lorenzo verified the property through satellite records.

The school appeared to be an abandoned convent surrounded by forest and high walls.

Roman prepared a rescue team using men who had passed independent loyalty checks.

Clara insisted on going.

Roman refused again.

“She may not believe strangers,” Clara said.

“She may not believe you either.”

“That does not mean I stay behind.”

Evelyn tried to apologize.

Clara would not look at her.

“You took sixteen years from me.”

“I thought the truth would destroy you.”

“The lie did.”

Roman approached Clara privately before departure.

“You can remain in the command vehicle.”

“I am entering the building.”

“No.”

“You keep speaking as if ordering me is protection.”

“In my world, hesitation kills people.”

“In mine, obedience let people erase my child.”

Roman stared at her.

No employee had spoken to him that way and remained standing.

Clara did not care.

He finally nodded.

“You stay behind me.”

“I stay where I can reach her.”

The operation began shortly before dawn.

The convent’s outer gate opened without resistance.

No guards appeared.

Inside, beds were neatly made.

Classrooms stood empty.

Dinner remained on plates.

Everyone had left minutes earlier.

In the central hall, Roman found thirteen photographs arranged in a circle.

One showed Clara at seventeen.

Another showed Michael Reed.

The final image showed a dark haired girl with Clara’s eyes.

Lucy.

A live monitor switched on.

Sebastian Vale appeared seated in a private hospital room.

Lucy stood beside him wearing a white dress.

Her face showed no fear.

Only discipline.

“Grandfather,” she said, “they arrived.”

Clara stepped toward the camera.

“Lucy?”

The girl looked at the screen.

No recognition entered her expression.

Sebastian smiled.

“She has been told her mother abandoned her.”

“That is a lie.”

“Truth is whatever survives long enough to become memory.”

Clara placed both hands against the monitor.

“I did not know you were alive.”

Lucy’s face remained cold.

“You knew enough to leave.”

“No.”

Sebastian touched her shoulder.

“She has served Halcyon with distinction. She understands sacrifice.”

Roman spoke.

“Release her.”

“You misunderstand. Lucy is not my prisoner.”

The girl lifted her chin.

“I chose to be here.”

Clara shook her head.

“You are thirteen.”

“I know what you are.”

“What did they tell you?”

“That your blood can save Grandfather, but you ran away.”

“He killed your father.”

Lucy’s composure cracked.

Sebastian’s hand tightened on her shoulder.

Roman noticed.

“So that is what you never told her.”

Sebastian’s smile vanished.

“Come to the ceremony tomorrow night. Clara may explain herself before the council.”

The screen changed.

A medical scan appeared.

Lucy was also compatible with Sebastian.

Below it were two surgical schedules.

One for Clara.

One for Lucy.

Only one donor was expected to survive.

Sebastian’s voice continued from the speakers.

“Halcyon does not need both.”

The feed ended.

Clara remained facing the blank screen.

Roman expected tears.

Instead, she turned toward him.

“We go to the ceremony.”

“It is a trap.”

“I know.”

“He will surround us with every person he owns.”

“I know.”

“He may force you to choose between yourself and Lucy.”

Clara’s face hardened.

“Then we do not give him the choice.”

A sound came from the convent chapel.

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

They entered carefully.

A man lay wounded behind the altar.

Michael Reed.

Lucy’s father.

Alive after thirteen years of captivity.

He opened his eyes when Clara knelt beside him.

“They made her hate you,” he whispered.

“Where is she?”

“At the hospital.”

“We know.”

Michael grabbed Roman’s sleeve.

“No, you don’t understand.”

His breathing became shallow.

“Lucy is not Sebastian’s donor.”

Roman leaned closer.

“Then why is she there?”

Michael looked at Clara.

May you like

“She is his successor.”

Continue to the next part: Clara must enter Halcyon’s succession ceremony knowing her own daughter has been trained to inherit the organization and may be ordered to kill Roman.
