Chapter 6 - The Child Raised to Rule Halcyon

Michael survived the journey to a secure medical facility.

He had spent thirteen years moving between Halcyon prisons.

Sebastian kept him alive because he possessed evidence inherited from his father, the federal prosecutor who first traced Halcyon’s judges and shell companies.

Michael refused to surrender the encryption key.

Halcyon responded by taking Lucy.

“She was raised to believe obedience gave her power,” Michael told Clara. “They taught her that we abandoned her because we were weak.”

“Did you ever see her?”

“Once every year. Through glass.”

“Did she know who you were?”

“They called me a traitor.”

Clara struggled to breathe.

“What did they teach her?”

“Languages. Finance. Weapons. Surveillance. How to identify fear. How to create it.”

Roman stood near the window.

“She is thirteen.”

Michael looked at him.

“Sebastian believes childhood is an inefficiency.”

Lucy had been designated Halcyon’s future leader years earlier.

Sebastian’s illness accelerated the succession plan.

The transplant story served another purpose.

It drew Clara and Roman into a controlled location.

Sebastian wanted Roman’s criminal empire absorbed into Halcyon.

He wanted Clara’s blood if necessary.

He wanted Lucy to prove herself by controlling both.

“What will she be ordered to do?” Clara asked.

Michael closed his eyes.

“Kill one of you.”

Evelyn sat in the corner, devastated.

Clara had not spoken to her since learning about Lucy.

Isabella studied the hospital blueprint.

“The council chamber sits above the operating theater.”

Roman looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“I attended ceremonies with Sebastian.”

“You were part of Halcyon.”

“I was forced to appear beside him.”

“That is not an answer.”

Isabella met his gaze.

“I signed documents. I attended dinners. I remained silent while people disappeared.”

Roman’s expression became cold.

“You expect forgiveness because your prison had expensive furniture.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Isabella handed him a small brass key.

“This opens the archive beneath Sebastian’s private suite. It contains the original membership ledger.”

“If we release it, Halcyon’s protection collapses.”

“Only if we survive long enough.”

The plan required three teams.

Lorenzo would enter through a medical supply tunnel.

Isabella would attend openly as Sebastian’s former partner.

Roman would arrive as the invited heir.

Clara would accompany him.

Evelyn remained with Michael under armed protection.

Before they left, Evelyn approached her daughter.

“I do not deserve to ask anything from you.”

Clara continued buttoning her coat.

“Then do not.”

“I only want to say that I loved you.”

“You loved keeping me close more than you loved letting me know myself.”

Evelyn absorbed the words.

“Yes.”

Clara looked at her mother.

“I may understand why one day. That is not the same as forgiving it.”

“I know.”

Clara left before emotion weakened her resolve.

Halcyon headquarters occupied a glass tower beside the Chicago River.

The public floors housed charities, medical research companies, and international foundations.

The ceremony occurred thirty feet underground.

Roman and Clara entered through a marble lobby lined with armed security.

Clara wore a black dress Isabella provided.

Roman remained in his black suit and overcoat.

He looked every inch the heir Sebastian wanted.

The elevator opened into a circular chamber.

Judges, executives, police commanders, doctors, and politicians sat around a black stone table.

Clara recognized faces from television.

People praised for protecting children.

People who controlled hospitals.

People who could erase a birth record with one phone call.

Sebastian sat at the head of the table.

Lucy stood beside him in white.

When Clara entered, the girl’s expression did not change.

Sebastian smiled.

“Roman. You came.”

“I came to watch you lose everything.”

Several council members shifted uneasily.

Sebastian looked toward Clara.

“And the lost granddaughter.”

Clara focused on Lucy.

“I did not abandon you.”

Lucy answered without emotion.

“That statement has no evidentiary value.”

“You sound like him.”

“He raised me.”

“He kidnapped you.”

“He gave me purpose.”

Clara took one step closer.

“Your purpose is not whatever frightened adults trained you to become.”

Lucy’s jaw tightened.

Sebastian tapped the table.

A screen displayed Michael’s prison photographs.

“He refused to cooperate. Your mother forgot you. I provided education, protection, and a future.”

“You killed my father,” Lucy said.

Clara shook her head.

“He is alive.”

For the first time, Lucy lost control.

Sebastian turned sharply.

Roman placed Michael’s live video feed on the table.

Michael appeared from the secure facility.

“Lucy.”

The girl stepped backward.

Sebastian reached for her arm.

She pulled away.

Michael continued.

“I never stopped looking at you, even when the glass was between us.”

Lucy’s eyes filled, but she refused to cry.

Sebastian addressed the council.

“This emotional display proves why children require discipline.”

Roman smiled coldly.

“No. It proves your successor knows you lied.”

The chamber doors locked.

Red lights appeared.

Sebastian pressed a control on his chair.

The floor beneath Clara opened into a descending medical platform.

Roman grabbed her hand, but armed guards surrounded him.

Lucy drew a pistol.

Sebastian pointed toward Roman.

“Your first act as successor.”

The girl aimed at him.

“Kill your uncle.”

Clara stood on the lowering platform.

“Lucy, look at me.”

The girl’s hands trembled.

“Do not listen,” Sebastian ordered.

Clara kept her voice steady.

“You do not have to prove you are strong by becoming the person who hurt you.”

Lucy’s finger tightened on the trigger.

A gunshot exploded.

May you like

Roman staggered.

Continue to the next part: Lucy fires during the succession ceremony, but the person who falls reveals another betrayal hidden within Roman’s inner circle.
