Chapter 8 - The Bargain Evelyn Never Confessed

Lorenzo survived emergency surgery.

The bullet damaged his liver but missed the major artery.

Roman remained beside the operating room until the surgeon confirmed he would live.

Then he confronted Evelyn.

She sat inside the secure courthouse wrapped in the same dark blanket Clara had used beneath the underpass.

The faded bracelet rested in her lap.

Roman placed the recipient chart on the table.

“Why was my heart assigned to you?”

Clara stood in the doorway.

Evelyn looked at her daughter and closed her eyes.

“Because Sebastian offered me a new life.”

Clara entered slowly.

“What did you promise him?”

“I did not agree.”

“The document lists you as recipient.”

“He created it before I answered.”

“What did he ask?”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“You.”

Clara recoiled.

Sebastian contacted Evelyn months earlier.

He knew where she lived.

He knew Clara worked for Roman.

He offered medical treatment capable of restoring part of Evelyn’s mobility and extending her life.

In exchange, she had to keep Clara employed inside the Moretti mansion and report any connection between Roman and the silver bracelet.

“You told him where I worked,” Clara said.

“No. He already knew.”

“But you answered his calls.”

“I was afraid.”

“You let me walk into their trap every day.”

“I thought refusing would make them take you immediately.”

Roman leaned forward.

“Why did he designate my heart for you?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your mother and I share a rare condition. Sebastian’s doctors believed your heart could survive in either of us.”

Roman’s stomach turned.

“He planned to choose which sister remained useful.”

Evelyn nodded.

Her disability had not resulted from a natural illness.

Fifteen years earlier, after rescuing Roman from the burning car, Halcyon captured her.

Dr. Shaw performed an experimental spinal procedure while attempting to extract information about Julian’s evidence.

Evelyn escaped, but the damage left her unable to walk.

She had hidden the truth from Clara because explaining the injury meant revealing Halcyon.

“You were tortured because you saved me,” Roman said.

“Yes.”

“And you still protected me tonight.”

“I protected Clara. Saving you was part of that.”

Clara’s expression remained wounded.

“You kept deciding that silence was the only way to love me.”

“I knew no other way.”

“That does not make it right.”

“No.”

Evelyn handed Roman the bracelet.

“Julian hid a data key inside the clasp.”

Roman examined it.

A nearly invisible panel opened beneath one star.

Inside was a thin memory strip.

Evelyn had carried it for twenty eight years without knowing how to access the encryption.

Michael Reed recognized the structure.

The key opened his father’s evidence archive.

Together, the files identified Halcyon members, hidden facilities, trafficking routes, and bribed officials.

It could destroy the organization.

It also revealed Sebastian’s escape destination.

A private estate on Lake Michigan known as Black Harbor.

Lucy sat beside Michael while analysts decoded the files.

She had barely spoken since the ceremony.

Clara approached carefully.

“I know you do not trust me.”

Lucy looked at the screen.

“You forgot me.”

“I was drugged. They erased the pregnancy from my memory.”

“That sounds convenient.”

“It does.”

Lucy finally looked at her.

“I waited for you.”

Clara swallowed.

“I am sorry.”

“Sorry does not change thirteen years.”

“No.”

“Are you going to tell me to forgive you because you are my mother?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Clara continued.

“I will answer every question. I will accept every angry thing you need to say. But I will not demand a relationship you did not choose.”

Lucy stared at her.

“You really did not know?”

“No.”

“Grandfather showed me letters you wrote.”

“I never wrote them.”

“They said you regretted having me.”

“I regretted many things. Never you.”

Lucy’s eyes filled.

She looked away before tears fell.

An analyst interrupted.

The bracelet archive contained a live transmission from Black Harbor.

Sebastian appeared in a medical suite.

His breathing was labored.

Dr. Shaw stood beside him.

On another bed lay Isabella.

Roman’s mother was unconscious and restrained.

Sebastian addressed the camera.

“You removed Lucy from my care. You stole my council and my records. Now I will take the only inheritance you still value.”

Roman’s face hardened.

“What are you doing to her?”

Dr. Shaw displayed Isabella’s medical chart.

She was compatible with Sebastian.

He intended to take part of her liver despite the risk that the operation would kill her.

Isabella regained consciousness.

She turned toward the camera.

“Roman, do not trade anything for me.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Mothers become noble only when death is close.”

The feed shifted to an exterior view of Black Harbor.

Armed guards surrounded the estate.

Children were visible through several upper windows.

Sebastian had moved Halcyon’s youngest trainees there before the ceremony.

Roman could not simply attack without risking them.

Lucy leaned toward the monitor.

“I know the house.”

Everyone turned.

“I trained there every winter.”

“Is there another entrance?” Roman asked.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Through the lake.”

Michael shook his head.

“The water is near freezing.”

Lucy replied, “That is why they believe no one will use it.”

Roman reached for his coat.

Clara stepped beside him.

“I am coming.”

He looked at her.

“This is not an argument about control. It is a combat operation.”

“My daughter knows the tunnels. My aunt is inside. Those children trust Lucy. We all have a role.”

Roman glanced toward Lucy.

The girl nodded.

Before they departed, Evelyn called Clara back.

“If I do not see you again”

Clara interrupted.

“Do not say goodbye as if dying would erase what remains between us.”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“What should I say?”

“Say you will be here when I return.”

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“I will be here.”

Clara nodded.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

At Black Harbor, Roman’s team entered the lake tunnel shortly before midnight.

Lucy led them through freezing water beneath the estate.

Halfway inside, she stopped.

A red light blinked above the passage.

“What is it?” Roman whispered.

Lucy’s face went pale.

“He knows we’re here.”

Steel gates slammed shut behind them.

Water began rising rapidly through the tunnel.

Continue to the next part: Roman, Clara, and Lucy are trapped inside a flooding passage while Sebastian begins Isabella’s surgery and orders the children above them to defend the estate.
