Chapter 4 - The Blood Beneath Clara’s Name

Roman transferred everyone to an abandoned federal courthouse his family secretly purchased years earlier.

Its underground holding cells were reinforced, windowless, and disconnected from city utility records.

Dominic was chained inside one cell.

The remaining mansion guards were detained until their loyalties could be verified.

Roman trusted only Lorenzo.

Not completely.

But enough to place a weapon in his hand.

Clara cleaned a cut along Evelyn’s forehead while Isabella stood across the room.

The two sisters had lost fifteen years and did not know how to cross the distance.

Roman placed Dominic’s stolen phone on the table.

It contained encrypted messages from Halcyon.

One file carried Clara’s photograph.

COMPATIBILITY NINETY EIGHT PERCENT

TRANSFER BEFORE SUCCESSION CEREMONY

Roman looked at Isabella.

“Compatible with what?”

She did not answer.

Evelyn did.

“Sebastian’s liver.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

“His illness destroyed more than his pancreas,” Evelyn said. “He needs a transplant.”

Roman’s face hardened.

“He has money, hospitals, and political influence.”

“He cannot use a normal donor,” Isabella explained. “His blood carries a rare genetic marker. Very few relatives are compatible.”

Roman understood.

“You are not compatible.”

“No.”

“Neither am I.”

“Not enough.”

He looked toward Clara.

“But she is.”

Clara stepped away from her mother.

“How am I related to him?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Your father was Sebastian’s eldest son.”

The answer silenced the room.

Clara had grown up believing her father died in a construction accident before she was born.

His real name was Julian Vale.

He was Roman’s half brother.

Clara was Sebastian’s granddaughter.

Roman stared at Evelyn.

“You had a child with my brother?”

“I did not know who he was when we met. Julian used another name.”

Isabella lowered herself into a chair.

“My son was alive?”

“You knew?”

“I knew Sebastian had children before Roman. He told me they died.”

Julian discovered Halcyon’s trafficking and bribery network while working inside his father’s companies. He tried to expose it.

Sebastian ordered him killed.

Evelyn was pregnant with Clara.

She disappeared before Halcyon could take the baby.

“For twenty eight years, you kept her hidden,” Roman said.

“I tried.”

“Until poverty forced her into my house.”

Evelyn looked at Clara.

“I did not know she worked for you until last month.”

Clara stared at her.

“You knew?”

“I saw the Moretti crest on your employment documents.”

“Why didn’t you tell me to leave?”

“Because the shelter was closing and I could not move. You needed money.”

“You let me enter the house of a man connected to everyone hunting us.”

“I believed Roman was separate.”

Roman looked toward Clara.

“Halcyon placed you in my mansion.”

She shook her head.

“I applied through an agency.”

“Who recommended the agency?”

“A woman at the church food pantry.”

Lorenzo searched the phone records.

The woman was connected to a Halcyon foundation.

Clara’s employment had been engineered.

Sebastian wanted her close to Roman, where she could be observed and captured during the succession struggle.

Roman opened another file.

It contained a transplant schedule.

Clara was listed as a living donor.

The operation was scheduled in forty eight hours.

Her consent form already carried a signature.

It looked like hers.

“I never signed that,” she whispered.

“They do not require your permission,” Isabella said.

Clara stepped toward the wall as if the room had become too small.

Roman kept his voice controlled.

“They will not touch you.”

“You cannot promise that.”

“Yes, I can.”

“You did not even know your own security chief worked for them.”

The truth stopped him.

Clara continued.

“You control men with guns. Sebastian controls judges, hospitals, and police. What happens when he declares me mentally unstable? What happens when records say I volunteered?”

Roman had no answer that would not sound like arrogance.

Evelyn reached for her daughter.

Clara moved away.

“You knew what my blood meant.”

“I wanted you to live without fear.”

“You made me live without information.”

Roman watched the argument and recognized an old pattern.

Secrets offered as protection.

Silence described as love.

He had lived beneath the same deception.

Lorenzo broke the tension.

“I found the ceremony location.”

Dominic’s messages referred to a private hospital beneath the Vale Foundation headquarters downtown.

Halcyon’s council would gather there in two nights.

Sebastian intended to undergo surgery while Roman signed succession documents.

If Roman refused, Clara would still be used.

If Clara died during the procedure, records would describe a tragic accident involving a homeless woman and her daughter.

Roman approached Dominic’s cell.

“Give me access codes.”

Dominic smiled.

“What do I receive?”

“An opportunity to continue breathing.”

“You cannot enter the hospital by force. Every entrance is watched.”

“Then I will be invited.”

“You already were.”

Dominic nodded toward Roman’s phone.

A message appeared.

Sebastian had sent a formal invitation.

One guest permitted.

Roman looked toward Lorenzo.

“No,” Clara said.

Everyone turned.

“I’m going with you.”

Roman’s voice became final.

“Absolutely not.”

“They want me. That gives me value.”

“It makes you a target.”

“I have been a target since birth. The difference is that now I know.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Clara, please.”

Clara looked at her mother.

“You spent my whole life deciding what truth I could survive. You do not decide this.”

Roman studied her.

She was frightened.

Her hands trembled.

But she had stopped lowering her eyes.

Before he could respond, Dominic began laughing inside the cell.

“You are all discussing a ceremony that has already changed.”

Roman stepped closer.

“What changed?”

Dominic looked toward Evelyn.

“Sebastian found another compatible donor.”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“Who?”

Dominic smiled.

May you like

“The daughter Clara was told died at birth.”

Continue to the next part: Clara discovers she may have a living child she never knew survived, and Sebastian intends to force her to choose which of them enters the operating room.
