Chapter 23 - Owen Came Back Before the Others Could

Owen served a little over two and a half years before transition and supervision under credits allowed.

He moved into a small apartment.

Worked at independent auto shop.

Paid restitution.

Did not call me.

For eight months.

Then sent letter through Ruth.

Mother,

I am not asking to see you.

I want you to know I understand why you may never see me again.

I keep remembering your voice saying my name from back seat.

I could have stopped at any point before Grant opened door.

I didn’t because I wanted money and because I was afraid of them.

Both are true.

Neither excuses.

I asked Ruth:

“Do you think he means it?”

She answered:

“Not my job.”

Right.

I waited six months.

Then agreed to one meeting.

Public.

Marcus not present.

No security theater.

Ruth nearby but not at table.

Owen looked older.

He started:

“I’m sorry.”

I stopped him.

“Tell me what you are sorry for.”

He swallowed.

“For choosing five hundred thousand dollars over you.”

Good.

“For driving.”

“Yes.”

“For not stopping.”

“Yes.”

“For letting Celia and Grant make me feel like cowardice meant I had no choice.”

I looked at him.

“That one is yours.”

“I know.”

“Are you asking forgiveness?”

“No.”

That surprised me.

“What are you asking?”

“Nothing.”

We sat.

Then he said:

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“Still do.”

“I know.”

“Does that make it worse?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

So did I.

We met again four months later.

Then occasionally.

No restored mother-son fantasy.

A narrower relationship.

Honest.

When he finished supervision, he sent proof of restitution without being asked.

He never touched estate planning.

May you like

Never asked Blackridge value.

That mattered more than apology.
