Chapter 15 - Owen Pleads First

Owen pleaded first.
He stood in court wearing gray suit that fit badly.
Thirty six years old.
The quiet child who used to hide beneath my kitchen table when social workers came.
Now he admitted driving while his brother threw me from vehicle.
Judge asked:
“Did you know Eleanor was being taken to pressure her into signing property documents?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she was physically vulnerable?”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop?”
“No.”
“After she was thrown from van, did you call emergency services?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of whom?”
“Grant.”
“Anything else?”
Owen looked down.
“Losing the money.”
There.
He admitted five hundred thousand promise.
Admitted turning around only when Celia remembered recorder.
Admitted he did not intend rescue.
He accepted plea to criminal endangerment, complicity in coercion, false report, and federal fraud conspiracy at reduced level due substantial cooperation.
Effective sentence:
Three years incarceration, followed by three years supervised release and restitution obligations.
Some people online later called it too little.
Others called it too much because he never touched me.
I stopped reading.
The law had recognized what he was.
Not mastermind.
Not innocent.
An accomplice who chose fear and money over his mother.
Before prison, he sent letter.
Mother,
I keep wanting to say I never meant it to go that far. That sentence is cowardly because I knew enough to stop the van before it went anywhere.

I did not answer.
Not then.
