Chapter 6 - The Cabin In My Name
The cabin was not legally in my name.
It was worse.
It was purchased through an LLC whose funding trail included Carter Recovery Partners.
The fake company.
Money left the fake business account.
Went through another shell.
Then became down payment on Red Pine Holdings LLC.
Red Pine bought the cabin six months earlier.
The registered manager was an online corporate service.
No Michael Carter on deed.
But forensic accounting could trace.
Jason had created a financial bridge from my stolen identity to the property where Sarah was found.
If police looked only superficially:
Fake Michael company.
Money to cabin.
Sarah missing.
Old angry messages.
Recent custody conflict.
Maybe they would investigate me first.
Would that prove guilt?
No.
But Jason wanted smoke.
Enough to buy time.
Sarah’s affidavit would have turned smoke into confession.
She refused.
Then audio from pool drive.
The drive was encrypted, but Sarah gave password to police from hospital.
Inside were copies of invoices.
Company registrations.
Emails.
And three audio recordings.
One had been made in Sarah’s kitchen with her phone placed nearby.
Jason:
“You don’t understand what you found.”
Sarah:
“I found Michael’s license.”
Jason:
“It’s paperwork.”
Sarah:
“You forged his signature.”
Jason:
“Keep your voice down.”
Then:
“If you go to him, he will come here. You know he will.”
Sarah:
“So?”
Jason:
“So I’ll have everything I need.”
“What does that mean?”
“You think cops are going to believe your angry ex over your husband?”
Then:
“Michael has threatened you for years.”
“No.”
“I have screenshots.”
“You made those.”
Jason laughed.
Then the line:
“If you disappear for two days, who do you think they look at first?”
The recording ended shortly after.
That was devastating.
Not a direct threat to make her disappear, but enough.
Second recording:
Sarah confronted about Carter Recovery.
Jason admitted “routing work” but not theft.
“You used his tax number.”
“He owes me for every problem he caused this family.”
What?
Jason resented me.
Why?
Sarah later explained.
Our custody schedule meant Emily spent half time with me.
Jason wanted household unified.
He hated my presence.
Also my company had won a commercial project Vale bid on two years earlier.
Business resentment.
Then third recording, two days before abduction:
Jason:
“Delete the copies.”
Sarah:
“No.”
“Then sign.”
“What?”
“A statement. You and Michael started Carter Recovery.”
“Never.”
“Then you can explain to prosecutor why his signature is everywhere.”
Sarah:
“Because you put it there.”
Jason:
“Prove it.”
She did.
Then audio stopped.
Enough for fraud case.
Kidnapping case stronger via cabin.
Sarah testified Jason forced her into car Friday by grabbing and threatening Emily.
Did he have weapon?
No.
He told her:
“If you scream, I leave Emily alone and tell police Michael took you.”
She believed due setup.
At warehouse, he restrained.
At cabin, he demanded password and signature.
He gave food/water.
No torture.
Still kidnapping/unlawful imprisonment.
Then Emily.
Jason locked her in enclosure only after she tried use phone.
Why not take with Sarah?
Because difficult.
He told Sarah Emily was with friend.
False.
Sarah did not know cage.
When police told, she broke down.
Then child services.
Sarah was victim.
Also questions about preexisting home safety.
Did she know Jason was controlling Emily?
She knew he was strict.
Not cage.
Did Emily ask extra nights?
Yes.
Sarah had sometimes refused because she feared Michael would think Jason problem and confront.
That was failure.
Sarah admitted.
Child welfare did not remove Emily from her permanently forever.
But temporary placement stayed with me while Sarah recovered and criminal investigation.
Sarah agreed.
“I’m not asking her back until she wants.”
That was important.
Then Jason remained jailed after upgraded charges.
Kidnapping Sarah.
Unlawful confinement of Emily.
Tampering/evidence destruction.
Identity theft/fraud.
Assault? Various.
No attempted murder because evidence not.
No human remains.
No black bag body.
The black bags held:
Shredded invoices.
Sarah’s old laptop.
Clothing from office.
A portable hard drive.
Printed fake messages.
Two weighted tool cases.
Jason tried destroy evidence, not corpses.
The water damaged some.
Forensics recovered enough.
Mrs. Harris became witness.
Then defense.
Jason’s lawyer, Kenneth Price, issued statement:
“Mr. Vale denies kidnapping. Sarah voluntarily left residence after marital dispute and later conspired with ex husband to portray consensual travel as abduction once financial irregularities emerged.”
Consensual travel.
The cabin restraints?
“Security measures Sarah agreed to because she feared Michael.”
Ridiculous.
But defense had to explain.
Then fake company?
“Sarah controlled bookkeeping and had access to Michael’s records.”
They were going to blame Sarah.
