Chapter 12 - Jason Takes The Stand
Jason testified.
Risky.
He believed he could explain.
He admitted fake Carter Recovery existed.
But claimed it began as “informal subcontracting vehicle” Sarah and I knew about.
I almost laughed.
His attorney asked:
“Did Michael authorize?”
“Through Sarah.”
No direct.
“Did you speak Michael?”
“No.”
“Why believe?”
“Sarah had his documents and said he wanted side work.”
Sarah denied.
Any email from her?
No.
Then forged messages.
He said drafts were part of custody strategy?
“Sarah and Michael were volatile. I was documenting.”
Why edited dates?
“File organization.”
Why fabricated message?
He denied.
Digital metadata showed created on his laptop.
He said he copied from Sarah’s old device.
Then affidavit.
He claimed Sarah planned sign to clarify business.
Why force?
“I didn’t.”
Then Friday.
“She agreed to come warehouse because we needed talk privately away from Emily.”
Why Emily said drag?
“She saw argument.”
Then warehouse restraints.
“No restraints.”
Zip ties?
“Work supplies.”
Sarah wrist marks?
“From struggling when she became hysterical.”
Then cabin.
Why move?
“She was afraid Michael would come to warehouse.”
That was almost clever.
He said Sarah agreed cabin as safe place.
Then why locked utility room?
He denied locked.
Police found latch outside.
He said door used storage.
Then why she called secretly?
“She had changed mind.”
Why not leave?
“No car.”
Then kid.
Why cage?
Jason paused.
“Emily was trying to run into street.”
Three days?
“Only intermittently.”
Lock?
“Temporary.”
Food/water.
Bathroom.
He said enclosure sheltered and visible from house.
Blue tarp.
Privacy panels.
Then phone removed because “child was escalating conflict.”
Even his version was awful.
Then black bags.
He admitted dumping business records.
Why?
“Sarah told me destroy duplicates.”
She denied.
Why after missing?
“Cleanup.”
Then Michael confrontation.
“He broke fence, broke lock, assaulted me.”
Video supported shove.
But reason.
Then pool box.
He claimed Sarah and I planted.
But box had been underwater long enough for algae/deposition? Forensic experts estimated more than days, consistent weeks. That defeated.
Then cross.
Prosecutor:
“Mr. Vale, did you ever speak to Michael about Carter Recovery?”
“No.”
“Any written authorization?”
“No.”
“Why use his signature?”
“Sarah provided.”
“Any proof she said permission?”
“No.”
“Why register fake email?”
“Business.”
“Why use Michael photo?”
“Brand.”
“Without asking.”
“Yes.”
“Why tell investigator Michael had no involvement after arrest?”
Did he? In initial? Maybe his lawyer said. Better if statement inconsistent.
At booking before counsel, he said:
“Michael doesn’t know anything about my business.”
Bodycam.
Prosecutor played.
Then:
“So now he was silent partner.”
Jason said:
“I meant operational.”
Weak.
Then kidnapping.
“Why draft affidavit two weeks before alleged voluntary discussion?”
“Planning.”
“Why property at cabin funded through fake Michael company?”
“Business structure.”
“Why lock?”
“No lock.”
Crime scene photo external haspad.
Maybe utility room door had outside hasp. Strong.
“Why Sarah’s fingerprints on inside window frame?”
“She tried open.”
“Why if voluntary?”
“She panicked.”
“Why take her phone?”
“I didn't.”
Her phone found in pool bag? Ah, yes! Let's make recovered from pool bag water damaged. Jason dumped it. That's devastating. Prosecutor:
“Why was her phone inside bag you dumped?”
He froze.
“I didn’t know.”
Mrs Harris saw him dump bags. Phone in one.
Then:
“Why Emily’s phone found in your locked desk?”
“For safety.”
“Why cage?”
“For safety.”
“Why fake messages?”
“For documentation.”
Everything called safety.
Then prosecutor:
“Whose safety?”
Objection argumentative.
Sustained.
Jury heard.
Then pool box.
Jason knew key?
He demanded because he recognized lockbox? He claimed he realized Sarah's.
He had been looking.
Then “belongs to me” comment about Emily on Mrs Harris recording.
He said heat of moment.
Then:
“You threatened Michael wouldn’t leave yard alive.”
Video.
He admitted words.
“Were you afraid of him?”
“Yes.”
“Yet charged him.”
“I was angry.”
Then evidence.
No need more.
The jury left with two versions.
