Chapter 14 - Sarah Does Not Move Back In

People expected Sarah and me to reconcile.
We did not.
Shared trauma is not marriage.
We had divorced for reasons that existed before Jason.
Different priorities.
Communication.
Resentment.
My anger.
Her avoidance.
We became better co-parents after catastrophe.
Not romantic.
Sarah lived in a townhouse near her mother.
Emily remained primarily with me first eighteen months.
Visits with Sarah increased.
At first two afternoons.
Then overnight.
Then alternating weekends.
Eventually shared schedule closer to before, but Emily had final say? Legally court considered age/preferences; not absolute.
Sarah had to rebuild trust.
One night Emily returned from Sarah’s and said:
“She keeps asking if I’m okay.”
“Too much?”
“Yes.”
I told Sarah gently.
She cried.
“I’m afraid miss something.”
“Listening isn't interrogation.”
She knew.
Then my own overcorrection.
I started checking doors three times.
Tracking Emily’s phone constantly.
Asking who, where.
She snapped:
“Dad, Jason locked me. You don’t need lock me with phone.”
That hurt.
I turned off constant location alerts except agreed safety.
Protection can mutate.
We learned.
Then Sarah apologized to Emily not once but specifically.
“I’m sorry I made your fear of Jason into a problem between me and your dad.”
“I’m sorry I said no when you asked extra nights.”
“I’m sorry I gave you key.”
Emily interrupted.
“Key saved proof.”
“Yes.”
“It was still too much.”
Emily thought.
“Okay.”
That became similar to Rachel/Leo prior story but fine. Need not repeat too much.
Then Sarah:
“I should have given it to adult.”
“Who?”
“Mrs Harris. Lawyer. Police.”
“Why didn’t?”
“I was scared.”
“Adults always scared.”
Sarah smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
Then Emily said:
“I forgive key.”
Not everything.
“Do you forgive me?”
“Not yet.”
Sarah accepted.
Years.
Then Mrs Harris.
She became beloved neighbor figure.
Emily visited.
Mrs Harris said:
“I should have called Friday.”
Emily:
“You called Sunday.”
“We all late.”
No perfection.
Then media.
The “black bags in pool” story became local fascination.
We refused interviews.
Some articles guessed bodies.
Police clarified evidence bags, no remains.
Emily’s identity protected as minor.
Still rumors.
We kept her away.
Then Jason’s family.
His sister Dana contacted Sarah.
“I’m sorry.”
She had not known.
She believed his initial innocence.
After trial, she accepted.
She asked no access Emily.
Good.
Then my business.
Carter Built Management sued Jason/Vale entities civilly for trademark/identity and lost contracts.
Insurance carriers settled portions.
Jason assets limited.
We recovered around $260,000, not full projected lost revenue.
Company survived.
No billionaire windfall.
Then licensing board publicly cleared my company.
Fake company closed.
My name repaired.
Still Google results.
Annoying.
Then I changed nothing about company name.
May you like
Carter remained.
Jason did not own my identity because he misused.
