Chapter 23 - The Letter Julian Sent

When Chloe was fourteen, Julian sent a letter through court-approved legal channel.
Not directly.
It was addressed to me first.
Eleanor,
I have spent years trying to decide which part to blame on Victoria, money, fear, or my own panic. Every explanation eventually reaches the same point: I carried my living daughter into a casket.
I stopped reading.
Then continued.
I told myself she would wake at the lake house and we would invent a recovery story later. That does not change what I did. I was willing to terrify her, drug her, restrain her, and make the world mourn her because I wanted money and time.
Then:
I prepared your documents too. I did not know if I would ever use them. I let myself believe thinking about it was different from planning. The casket proves it wasn’t.
No request for forgiveness.
He wrote:
Do not give this to Chloe unless a therapist says it helps her.
Good.
I stored it.
Victoria sent one later.
Shorter.
I cannot ask to be called her mother after what I did.
I stored that too.
Neither letter changed custody.
Neither changed trust.
