Chapter 19 - Lily Reads the Case File
At eighteen, Lily asked to read everything.
Not just family version.
Police reports.
Court documents.
Camera transcript.
Vanessa’s plea.
My victim statement.
Daniel’s counseling? No private. Only what was public.
We said yes.
With therapist available.
She read for two days.
Then came home furious.
At Daniel.
Surprised us.
“You told Vanessa Mom was replacing her.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“You knew she was unstable.”
“I knew she was angry. I did not know she would become violent.”
“You lied to everybody.”
“Yes.”
“You’re part of why this happened.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
I stepped in.
Lily raised hand.
“No, Mom.”
I stopped.
She continued.
“Why did everyone forgive Dad easier?”
Oof.
We considered.
Daniel was not convicted.
Did not push.
But his peacemaking harmed.
Maybe family minimized because harm indirect.
Lily saw inequality.
Daniel said:
“You shouldn’t.”
“What?”
“Forgive me easier.”
He told her whole truth.
His promise.
His lies.
His guilt.
His wall punch.
Therapy.
Lily cried.
Then asked:
“Did Mom almost leave you?”
“Yes.”
That surprised her.
Good.
No perfect marriage myth.
She read case again.
Then met Vanessa.
Said:
“I understand more now.”
Vanessa asked:
“Does that help?”
“No.”
Fair.
