Chapter 18 - Vanessa’s Second Life

Vanessa became a financial counselor for women leaving prison.
Irony.
She had been convicted partly for misusing financial systems.
Now she taught budgeting, credit repair, employment basics.
Some people thought publicity stunt.
Maybe at first.
She kept doing it after attention ended.
Years.
That mattered.
She never returned to Bennett Development.
Never asked.
Daniel once offered advisory role.
I stopped him.
Not because Vanessa unsafe.
Because family-company entanglement was old pattern.
Daniel admitted bad idea.
Vanessa declined before hearing we discussed.
Good.
Lily eventually visited her program at seventeen.
Not as survivor story.
As volunteer.
I worried.
Allowed.
Choice with boundaries.
Afterward Lily said:
“Aunt Vanessa is good at teaching.”
I nodded.
“She always was smart.”
“Grandma made that complicated.”
“Yes.”
“Do you trust her?”
“Some ways.”
“Not others?”
“Trust isn’t one bucket.”
She rolled eyes.
May you like
“Therapy sentence.”
Absolutely.
