Chapter 8 - THE RED UMBRELLA

Hannah sat with Eva again.

Roman did not ask questions directly.

He sat where Eva could see him.

Marcus sat near the window.

The red umbrella mattered enough that Cole used it deliberately.

Maybe to frighten Roman.

Maybe to send a clue.

Maybe both.

Eva drew first.

Rain.

Black car.

Red umbrella.

A woman.

Isabella.

A man beside her.

Victor Morrow.

Another figure near a second vehicle.

Eva colored that figure black.

Cole?

Hannah asked:

“Did the man with Mommy have an umbrella?”

Eva nodded.

“Victor?”

Eva did not know the name.

Roman showed no photo yet.

Then she drew a circle beneath the umbrella.

A key?

No.

A bag.

Isabella handing something to the man.

Roman’s heart tightened.

Maybe Isabella met Morrow voluntarily before the crash.

That complicated everything.

Was Morrow enemy?

Informant?

Blackmailer?

Eva drew another figure.

Michael.

Roman recognized the scar she added.

Michael was there too.

Why?

Three adults near Isabella before the crash.

The official story said Isabella left a charity dinner and drove home.

No roadside meeting.

Roman asked Hannah to show Eva four photographs separately.

Cole.

Morrow.

Michael.

Unknown security guard.

Eva pointed at Morrow for umbrella.

Michael for second man.

Cole for black figure by vehicle.

Roman felt sick.

Eva remembered all three.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy yelling.”

“At who?” Hannah asked.

Eva pointed at Morrow.

“What happened next?”

Eva covered her ears.

Enough.

Hannah stopped.

Roman walked outside.

Marcus followed.

“You okay?”

Roman almost laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

Roman looked at him.

“What?”

“If you said yes, I’d know you were insane.”

The boy’s bluntness kept Roman grounded.

The old charity dinner guest list produced another lead.

Isabella attended a fundraiser at the Whitmore Arts Center.

She left at 9:42.

Morrow left at 9:31.

Michael left at 9:36.

Cole left at 9:40.

All four departed within eleven minutes.

Roman had remained inside until ten fifteen.

Why did nobody tell him?

Because Cole’s report said Isabella left alone after feeling tired.

The parking camera archive had been erased years ago.

But a photographer’s contact sheets survived.

One image captured Isabella near the service drive.

Red umbrella.

Morrow beside her.

Michael behind them.

Cole in background.

Eva inside Isabella’s arms.

Exactly.

Then another image showed Isabella holding a blue notebook.

Blue ledger.

She handed it to Michael.

Morrow reached for it.

Isabella pulled away.

Cole watched.

Roman stared.

“What did Michael do with it?”

Nobody knew.

The photographer remembered tension.

“I thought they were arguing about business.”

What kind?

“Heard Mrs. Vale say, ‘Roman needs to see it tonight.’”

Roman’s chest tightened.

She intended to tell him.

She never arrived.

Then the photographer remembered another sentence.

Morrow:

“If Roman sees that, everyone burns.”

Isabella:

“Then maybe they should.”

That sounded like her.

Fearless.

Then Michael:

“Give it to me. I’ll get it to him.”

Did Isabella?

Photo showed yes.

Michael had the blue ledger before the crash.

So why had Roman never received it?

Because Michael went into hiding later?

No.

He remained at Roman’s side for years.

That meant Michael withheld it too.

Why?

Maybe to protect Roman.

Another man deciding what Roman could handle.

The irony almost made him laugh.

Then an old voicemail surfaced from Isabella’s cloud backup.

Timestamp:

9:51 p.m.

To Michael.

“Do not bring the ledger to Roman yet. Morrow says the numbers involve Eva’s trust. I need proof.”

She changed her mind after handing it over.

Michael obeyed.

Maybe.

At 10:02 another call.

Isabella to Cole.

Duration four minutes.

No recording.

Then crash at 10:41.

What happened during forty minutes?

The road reconstruction mapped route.

Isabella detoured to a private marina.

Michael’s old keycard accessed a marina storage room at 10:12.

Blue ledger may have been hidden there.

Roman owned the marina then.

Still did.

They searched.

Storage rebuilt twice.

Nothing obvious.

Then Marcus noticed an old photograph on the wall.

Ethan.

Working a marina summer job.

Again.

Ethan had been everywhere around this history.

Roman almost laughed.

Ethan may have found the blue ledger years later.

That could be what he and Michael were protecting.

Then Jonah called.

“We found Cole.”

“Where?”

“Not him. His car.”

“Where?”

“Marina.”

Roman’s blood cooled.

May you like

Cole went to the same place Isabella and Michael visited before the fatal crash.

Continue to the next part: Cole disappears directly toward the marina where Isabella may have hidden the original evidence years earlier.
