Chapter 14 - THE ESTATE BELONGED TO EVA

The estate had been in Roman’s family for thirty years.

At least that was what he believed.

The mansion belonged to Vale Properties.

Roman controlled Vale Properties.

Simple.

Except land beneath the mansion had been separated decades earlier.

Isabella’s father purchased it through Harbor Holdings before Roman and Isabella married.

When they built the estate, Harbor granted a ninety nine year ground lease to Vale Properties.

Roman never paid attention.

His father handled construction structure.

Isabella later inherited Harbor Holdings.

Then created the Harbor Voting Trust for Eva.

Meaning:

Roman owned the mansion structure through Vale Properties.

Eva’s trust owned the land beneath it.

Symbolically absurd.

Legally important.

If Cole’s forged amendment gave him trustee authority, he had potential leverage over the estate itself.

He never used it openly because Roman would discover the trust.

Instead, Cole and Morrow used Harbor trust assets quietly.

Borrowing.

Cross guarantees.

Land valuation.

Millions.

Eva’s hidden wealth funded their network.

Katherine Bell, as emergency independent trustee, could unwind parts.

That was why she disappeared.

Morrow hunted her.

Michael helped her leave.

Cole later tried finding her because he needed original documents destroyed.

Michael found her first.

Now Katherine agreed to return.

Not to Roman’s estate.

Federal courthouse annex in San Francisco.

Roman hated neutral ground.

He went anyway.

Katherine Bell was eighty one.

Small.

Silver hair.

Zero fear.

“You look like your father.”

Roman almost took it as insult.

She placed a thick binder on the table.

“Isabella signed this three days after the crash.”

Emergency trustee replacement.

Witnessed by two hospital staff.

Michael.

And one attorney.

Valid?

Lawyers would decide formally.

But document looked strong.

Katherine accepted appointment.

Then hid because Morrow threatened her grandson.

She transferred day to day administration to a regulated trust company and vanished from public records.

Why did Roman never receive statements?

Because Morrow and Cole intercepted correspondence through corrupted estate counsel.

Again.

Institutional capture.

Katherine had spent five years gathering evidence.

Why not contact law enforcement?

She did.

One federal investigation opened.

Then stalled after a key agent was exposed as receiving Morrow money.

She stopped trusting the channel.

Only recently did a new task force reopen related corruption.

That explained the shooter at the depot.

Morrow’s network included officials still afraid of the ledgers.

Cole was both participant and possible witness.

Roman understood now why somebody tried to kill him.

Katherine looked at Roman.

“You want Cole dead.”

“Yes.”

“Do not.”

Roman smiled coldly.

“People keep telling me that.”

“Because he is useful.”

“He terrified my daughter.”

“And he may be the only living senior insider who can identify Morrow’s remaining network.”

Roman hated practicality.

Then Katherine looked at Eva, who had come with Hannah and Marcus under careful security.

“You must be Eva.”

Eva nodded.

Katherine did not ask her to speak.

Good.

She handed Eva a small wooden box.

“Your mother asked me to give this to you when you were old enough to understand choice.”

Eva opened it.

Inside:

A silver pendant.

And a letter.

Roman did not read.

Not his.

Eva looked at him.

Then handed it over.

Her choice.

Isabella wrote:

Eva,

If anyone ever tells you silence keeps people safe, remember that silence can protect bad people too.

Roman stopped.

Eva read beside him.

Then:

Your voice belongs to you. You do not owe it to doctors, family, fear, or anyone who loves you.

Eva whispered:

“Mommy knew.”

Roman nodded.

“She hoped.”

Then Katherine produced another document.

The Harbor Trust assets had grown.

Not thirty million.

More than one hundred forty million, excluding business shares.

Cole and Morrow had siphoned significant amounts, but not everything.

Eva was wealthy independently.

Roman almost laughed at the irrelevance.

He would have given her every dollar he had.

The money did not matter emotionally.

Legally, it mattered because the corruption network had motive to keep control.

Katherine continued:

“There is one account we cannot explain.”

“What?”

“Opened six years ago.”

“Project Orchard?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Beneficiary Marcus Shaw.”

Marcus stared.

His million dollar trust was only one piece.

Another Harbor account existed in his name.

Value:

Nine million.

Established when Marcus was ten.

Ethan could not have created it.

Michael could.

But why give a child he barely knew nine million dollars from Eva’s trust?

Katherine looked at Roman.

“Because Marcus is not who you think he is.”

Marcus went pale.

Roman turned.

“What?”

Katherine opened an old birth record.

Marcus Shaw.

Mother:

Elena Shaw.

Father field:

Blank.

Attached private paternity affidavit:

Michael Vale.

Roman stared at Marcus.

His missing brother’s son.

May you like

Marcus was his nephew.

Continue to the next part: Marcus entered Roman’s estate as a homeless stranger, but hidden trust records claim he is Michael Vale’s son.
