Chapter 11 - THE DEAD MECHANIC

Frank Doyle lived under the name Franklin Dale in Pennsylvania.
Different hair.
Different weight.
Same fingerprints from an old union record.
Alive.
Roman did not send men.
Federal? Could involve police but Roman criminal. Better private attorneys/security and state authorities carefully. The investigation into Isabella’s crash had reopened through state police after new evidence.
Detective Sarah Mills interviewed Doyle.
Roman watched through counsel.
Doyle admitted being at the Vale estate the night Isabella died.
Did he cut the brakes?
“Yes.”
Roman’s vision darkened.
“Who ordered it?”
Doyle looked toward his attorney.
“Victor Morrow.”
“Cole?”
“No.”
“Did Cole know?”
“Not when I did it.”
“What exactly were you told?”
“Disable rear braking enough to force the driver to stop.”
Another temporary sabotage.
A familiar lie people tell themselves.
“Did you expect a crash?”
“No.”
“Did Morrow?”
Doyle looked down.
“He said another vehicle would block the road and take the ledger.”
The truck.
A forced stop.
Not necessarily intended collision.
But rain.
Speed.
Mechanical failure.
A plan to stop Isabella turned fatal.
Then:
“What did Cole do?”
“He installed a tracker.”
“Before or after you cut the line?”
“After.”
“Did he see?”
“I do not know.”
Cole may have discovered the sabotage too late.
Or noticed nothing.
Then Doyle admitted Morrow had ordered him killed after the crash because he knew too much.
Michael helped him disappear.
Official death was staged.
That explained how Michael learned survival through fake deaths.
Years later he used the same method himself.
Michael’s pattern came from protecting witnesses.
Not necessarily betrayal.
“Why did you not tell Roman?”
Doyle laughed bitterly.
“Because Roman was Roman.”
That hurt because it was reasonable.
Roman’s empire used fear.
People assumed telling him dangerous truths could get them killed.
The reputation that protected him also isolated him.
Then Doyle said:
“Cole found me later.”
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
“What happened?”
“He offered money.”
“For silence?”
“For location.”
“Whose?”
“Michael.”
Cole was hunting Michael’s hidden witness network.
Why?
Maybe to protect himself.
Maybe to dismantle Morrow’s leftovers.
Then Doyle asked:
“Is Cole still working for Roman?”
Nobody answered.
He understood.
“Then Roman never knew.”
No.
Roman never knew.
The investigation cleared one question partially.
Cole did not order Isabella’s brake sabotage based on current evidence.
Morrow did.
Cole still helped track her.
Still concealed Orchard.
Still threatened Eva.
Still hunted Ethan.
Different responsibility.
Then Doyle identified the truck driver.
Henry Miles.
He did not know the plan would become lethal.
Morrow told him to block Isabella and force her to stop.
Henry died when the vehicles collided.
Again, people participating in coercion without expecting death.
Still causal.
Still wrong.
Victor Morrow built the plan.
Why?
The blue ledger.
Control of Harbor Trust.
Fear Isabella would expose his parallel network.
Morrow died five years ago in a warehouse shooting.
Who killed him?
Officially rival gunmen.
Michael’s black ledger said:
COLE SOLVED MORROW.
Did Cole kill Morrow?
Maybe.
Cole might have removed the original architect and inherited the machine.
That would explain why Orchard continued under him.
Roman finally understood Cole’s possible position.
Not original killer.
Successor cover up.
Morrow died.
Cole took over the hidden accounts, Orchard, and Eva trust authority.
Why keep it going?
Because exposing Morrow would expose Cole’s years of cooperation.
And because the money was profitable.
Then Marcus’s million dollar trust received an attempted access.
Someone tried to move funds.
Origin:
Cole controlled shell.
He was alive and active.
Target transfer:
Cayman account.
Roman froze through attorneys.
Cole wanted Marcus’s protection money.
Maybe because it funded escape.
Then Marcus received a message on a burner delivered to the estate gate.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT ETHAN ALIVE.
Location:
Old train depot.
Marcus went white.
Roman looked at him.
“You are not going alone.”
“He said Ethan alive.”
“He could be lying.”
Marcus shouted:
“He’s my brother!”
Eva appeared in the hallway.
Marcus stopped.
She looked at him.
Then said:
“Don’t go.”
He looked at her.
“I have to.”
Eva shook her head.
“He wants you.”
Roman stared.
“How do you know?”
Eva pointed at the message.
“Same words.”
“What same words?”
She whispered:
“Cole said to Uncle Michael.”
Roman went cold.
Eva had heard Cole threaten Michael in Isabella’s room.
“Do you remember?”
She nodded.
“Come alone if you want Ethan alive.”
Roman stared at Marcus.
Cole had used the same bait before.
Maybe against Michael.
May you like
And Michael had gone.
Continue to the next part: Eva remembers that Cole used the exact same threat to lure Michael away shortly before he vanished.
