Chapter 5 - THE ROOM EVA WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO ENTER

Roman wanted to question Eva immediately.
He did not.
Fear was not an interrogation tool for a child.
He called Dr. Hannah Price, the only therapist Eva had consistently tolerated.
Not because Hannah would extract information.
Because she understood how to let Eva control pace.
They sat in the sunroom.
No guards.
No Cole.
Marcus stayed outside until Eva pointed toward him.
“Marcus.”
Hannah looked at Roman.
“Her choice?”
Roman nodded.
Marcus entered.
Eva sat closer to him.
Hannah placed paper on the table.
“You can talk, write, point, or not answer.”
Eva nodded.
“Did someone take you into your mother’s room?”
Eva whispered:
“Yes.”
Roman kept his face still.
“Who?”
Hannah asked.
Eva drew.
A tall man.
Black jacket.
Another man with a line beneath one eye.
Michael’s scar.
Then a third figure.
No face.
Eva colored the hands black.
Gloves.
Hannah asked:
“Which person scared you?”
Eva pointed to the gloved figure.
“Name?”
Eva’s mouth closed.
Roman’s heart sank.
Not because she stopped speaking.
Because her body changed.
Shoulders inward.
Fingers twisting.
Hannah moved away from the question.
“What did Uncle Michael do?”
Eva whispered:
“Hide.”
“Did he hide you?”
She shook her head.
“He hid.”
“In the room?”
“Yes.”
“What did the scary person do?”
Eva looked toward Roman.
Then:
“Said Daddy would die.”
Roman felt his hands go cold.
“When?”
No answer.
Hannah stopped him with one glance.
Enough.
The hidden camera became priority.
Its memory card contained weeks of intermittent footage.
Some clips corrupted.
Others clear.
Three months earlier, Michael entered Isabella’s room through a hidden service panel behind the wardrobe.
Roman had forgotten the passage existed.
Old estates had stupid secrets.
Michael looked thin.
Beard.
Alive.
He placed documents in the desk.
Then Eva appeared.
She had somehow discovered the panel from the adjoining playroom.
Michael saw her.
Dropped to his knees.
Held one finger to his lips.
Eva did not scream.
He spoke softly.
Audio weak.
“Uncle Michael needs you to keep one secret.”
Roman’s jaw tightened.
Never ask a child to keep secrets from a parent.
Michael continued.
“There are bad people watching your dad.”
Eva looked frightened.
Then another clip.
Two weeks later.
Michael again.
This time with Ethan.
Marcus’s brother.
They copied papers.
Photographed ledgers.
Then a sound outside.
Michael pushed Ethan behind the wardrobe.
Eva entered through the playroom.
Captain Cole unlocked the main door.
Roman’s pulse stopped.
Cole walked in.
He did not see Michael.
He saw Eva.
“What are you doing here?”
Eva pointed toward the desk.
Cole crossed the room.
Opened drawers.
Found nothing.
Then crouched in front of her.
Audio clear.
“You know this room makes Daddy sad.”
Eva stared.
Cole smiled.
“If you tell him you were here, he might get very angry.”
Eva’s hands tightened.
Cole continued.
“Sometimes when people make Daddy angry, bad things happen.”
Roman’s vision narrowed.
Cole never directly threatened her.
He did something worse.
Used Roman’s reputation against his daughter.
Made her fear her father.
Then:
“You do not want Daddy to disappear like Mommy, do you?”
Eva’s face collapsed.
Cole touched her hair.
“So we keep quiet.”
The footage ended.
Roman stood so abruptly the chair moved.
Marcus looked at him.
“Don’t.”
Roman turned.
“What?”
“If you go kill him now, you lose everything he knows.”
A sixteen year old had just told Roman Vale not to let anger destroy evidence.
Roman hated that the boy was right.
The next footage explained more.
After Cole left, Michael emerged.
Eva was crying silently.
Michael held her.
He said:
“I’m sorry.”
Then:
“You do not have to talk to anyone until you feel safe.”
That sentence may have reinforced her silence.
Maybe not caused it.
Eva had been nonverbal before this incident according to Roman’s memory.
But fear around speech could have deepened.
The timeline mattered.
Her mutism began much earlier.
So Cole was not the original cause.
He exploited it.
Roman refused to rewrite seven years from one recording.
Then the last clip.
Recorded five nights before Marcus entered the estate.
Michael entered the room alone.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Roman, if you find this, Ethan is gone.”
Marcus went pale.
Michael continued.
“Cole has him or Cole’s people do.”
Marcus stood.
“No.”
Michael:
“Do not trust the ledger alone. Orchard is not money laundering. It is something built around Eva.”
Roman’s stomach tightened.
“E7?”
Michael nodded toward the camera as if hearing him.
“Start with the doctors Cole recommended after Isabella died.”
Roman froze.
Captain Cole had coordinated Eva’s specialists for years.
Then Michael said:
“And Roman, Isabella did not die in the accident you were told she did.”

The video cut.
Continue to the next part: Michael claims Roman’s wife’s death and Eva’s years of silence are tied to the same hidden project inside Roman’s organization.
