Chapter 13 - ISABELLA AFTER THE CRASH
Roman did not believe the photograph.
He wanted to.
That was different.
Forensic review first.
Image genuine.
Timestamp consistent.
No obvious manipulation.
Hospital room unidentified.
Isabella badly injured.
Bandaged.
Alive.
Two days after the crash.
Official records said she died at scene.
Why?
Michael’s memory stick contained audio.
His voice.
“Isabella survived transport under an unidentified trauma intake. Morrow had people at Saint Vincent. Cole moved her before Roman arrived.”
Cole moved her.
Again, a more complicated role.
Audio continued.
“She had a severe brain injury and internal damage. Doctor said survival uncertain.”
Roman closed his eyes.
“Cole said if Roman knew she was alive, Morrow would use him to find her.”
So they lied to Roman.
Protected Isabella through secrecy.
Did she recover?
Next file.
Isabella’s voice weak.
“Do not tell Roman yet.”
Roman felt something break.
Even her.
Why?
“Morrow owns police. He will watch Roman.”
She feared Roman’s grief would expose location.
Then:
“Get Eva away from Cole if I die.”
Contradiction.
Cole saved her but she still distrusted him.
Because Cole worked both sides.
Michael explained:
“Cole helped us after the crash because he realized Morrow intended to kill everyone who knew about the ledger. But Cole wanted the Harbor Trust issue buried too.”
Self preservation.
He could save Isabella and still conceal his own fraud.
No simple hero or villain.
Then final hospital entry.
Isabella died four days later from complications.
Real death.
Not alive now.
Roman’s hope existed for twenty seconds.
Then ended.
He sat alone for an hour.
Nobody disturbed him.
Later, he listened to Isabella’s final recording.
“Roman.”
Her voice barely audible.
“If you ever hear this, I am sorry.”
He closed his eyes.
“I should have told you sooner.”
Yes.
“You would have burned the city to find Morrow.”
Probably.
“And Eva would have grown up inside the fire.”
That hurt because she knew him.
“I needed proof before I gave you rage.”
Roman laughed once through tears.
Everyone feared what his anger would do.
They were not entirely wrong.
Isabella continued.
“Do not let what happened to me teach Eva that silence is safety.”
Roman stopped breathing.
Seven years.
That was exactly what happened.
Not because Isabella wanted it.
Because everyone around Eva modeled secrecy.
Cole told her silence protected Roman.
Michael asked her to keep secrets.
Doctors monitored instead of explaining.
Roman himself filled the house with fear.
Eva learned silence was safer.
Then Marcus arrived.
Roman wiped his face before looking up.
“Any Ethan news?”
“Cole gave location.”
“Police going?”
“Yes.”
Marcus swallowed.
“Can I go?”
“No.”
“I hate you.”
“Good.”
Marcus almost smiled despite himself.
Ethan was found in a private safe house owned through Project Orchard.
Alive.
Badly injured.
Dehydrated.
But alive.
He had been held for six weeks.
Cole admitted ordering confinement.
Why not kill him?
Because Ethan knew where Michael was.
Cole needed Michael.
And Michael had the original Harbor Trust documents proving the successor amendment forged.
Where was Michael?
Ethan knew partly.
“He moved every week.”
“Last contact?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“What was he doing?”
“Trying to reach someone Morrow never controlled.”
“Who?”
Ethan looked at Roman.
“Your daughter’s real trustee.”
Roman frowned.
“I am trustee.”
“Not the Harbor shares.”
“What?”
“Isabella changed them after the crash.”
“How?”
“She signed an emergency instruction at the hospital.”
Roman stared.
Before she died, Isabella had removed Morrow and Cole succession rights.
Replacement independent trustee:
A woman named Katherine Bell.
Who?
Former federal judge.
Isabella’s godmother.
Retired.
Roman knew her only socially.
Katherine had never contacted him.
Why?
Because Michael never delivered the signed instruction?
Ethan shook his head.
“He did.”
“Then?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
Same time Morrow died.
Roman’s pulse changed.
Maybe she was killed.
Maybe hiding.
Then Ethan said:
“Michael found her last month.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“California.”
“Why did she hide?”
Ethan looked toward Eva.
“Because the Harbor Trust doesn’t just own twelve percent of your legitimate businesses.”
