Chapter 4 - Ellie’s Burns
The burn surgeon was careful with words.
That mattered.
Ellie had superficial partial-thickness burns across much of her left cheek and neck, with one deeper partial-thickness area near upper chest where the coffee-soaked shirt had held heat against skin before I removed it.
No full-thickness burn.
No eye damage.
No airway injury.
No surgery initially.
Daily wound care.
Pain control.
Follow-up.
Possible pigmentation changes.
Possible scarring.
Too soon to know.
I held onto “possible.”
Linda’s attorney later called injury “minor.”
I wanted to put him through wall.
Instead, Sarah reminded:
“Medical records speak.”
Ellie stayed overnight for pain control and observation.
By Monday afternoon, she was eating applesauce and asking for stuffed rabbit.
My father brought it from our house because I would not go.
Ben offered.
I refused.
Not because he could not be trusted to retrieve toy.
Because I could not look at him yet.
Then police interviewed separately.
Dana voluntarily contacted Detective Maya Collins.
Aaron did too.
Their stories changed.
Current incident:
Dana admitted Linda deliberately moved mug toward Ellie after scolding.
Aaron said he saw arm motion but not exact aim.
Gary insisted accident.
Ben admitted he witnessed throw but claimed he “could not tell whether intentional.”
The video could.
Then prior Cole injury.
Dana admitted lie.
Aaron admitted lie.
Ben admitted helping suggest Walnut Ridge playground.
Gary denied directing.
The recording captured:
“Same story as Cole.”
That made denial difficult.
Then CPS/children services reopened Cole’s old file.
Not “take child.”
They interviewed Dana/Aaron.
Checked home.
Verified parents protective now.
Ordered no unsupervised contact with Linda during investigation.
Cole remained with parents.
Good.
The system did not automatically punish children for adult lies.
Then Linda.
She hired lawyer and stopped speaking.
Before lawyer, she had given patrol officer statement:
Ellie lunged toward mug and startled me.
Video showed Ellie several feet away reaching toward Cole’s plastic cup.
Linda moved toward child.
Different.
Then her phone messages.
Police could not just search without warrant/consent. Dana voluntarily shared messages she had from Linda.
Saturday night before lunch:
LINDA:
Cole better not spend whole day surrendering his toys to Rachel’s spoiled child.
DANA:
They’re toddlers.
LINDA:
Exactly when they learn.
Then Sunday, thirty minutes before lunch:
LINDA:
Ellie keeps taking things. Rachel thinks everything belongs to that kid.
Dana had replied:
Mom stop.
This established resentment, not plan to burn.
Then after incident:
LINDA:
Delete anything you sent about Ellie grabbing things. Rachel will twist.
That looked bad.
Dana preserved.
Then Gary group chat:
Nobody speaks to police separately until we agree on facts.
Aaron:
They already asked.
Gary:
Then same answer. Ellie lunged, Linda flinched. Do not destroy this family over one mistake.
Witness coaching.
Potential obstruction.
Then Ben.
He had received.
No reply.
But his silence in kitchen now looked like pattern.
Then Sarah asked about finances.
“Why?”
“Because you are filing divorce and separating household.”
I explained Gary’s loan.
Ben’s business.
I had no numbers.
Sarah:
“Then we obtain financial disclosure. Do not empty joint account.”
“I want my money safe.”
“You can redirect future paycheck to separate account immediately. Preserve reasonable household funds. We seek temporary orders.”
Dad nodded.
No revenge freezing.
No secret wealthy-father trick.
That was important.
Then our house.
Purchased four years earlier after marriage? Ben and Rachel maybe married 4 years, Ellie 2. Title joint. Down payment $120k: Dad gifted Rachel $80k? Could become separate/marital. Let's set they bought after marriage with $90k from Rachel's premarital savings + $40k joint. Title joint, likely marital. Property division later.
Mortgage.
No secret.
Then Ben’s business loan from Gary.
Was Rachel liable?
No signature.
Personal note between Gary and Ben/ business.
Good.
Then dad's “tomorrow we end them” reinterpreted.
Monday evening, Dad sat in hospital cafeteria.
“I need to say something.”
“What?”
“When you said end them, you were furious.”
“Yes.”
“Do not let anger turn you into Gary.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
“He controls people through money and family pressure. We are not doing that.”
“I wasn’t planning…”
“I know. I’m reminding both of us.”
He was right.
Dad had money.
Not fortune.
He could pay lawyers.
He could offer house.
That power could tempt.
“We protect Ellie. We separate your finances. We let investigators handle crimes.”
I nodded.
Then Ellie woke crying.
I returned.
She reached arms.
“Mommy.”
I held her.
She touched bandage.
“Hot.”
“I know.”
“Grandma hot.”
My throat closed.
She had words.
At two.
