Chapter 22 - The Video Ellie Never Needed

At sixteen, Ellie asked to see the video.

I had kept original encrypted with legal files.

My instinct:

No.

Then therapist:

“She is old enough to choose if prepared.”

We discussed.

Ellie said:

“I remember scream but not picture. I want know if memory is worse.”

We watched together once.

She cried before coffee flew.

Not after.

She watched Linda’s arm.

My rush.

Gary’s voice.

Ben’s “I understand.”

Then she paused.

“Dad said that?”

“Yes.”

“He was scared?”

“Yes.”

“Still wrong.”

“Yes.”

She watched remainder.

Then:

“I don’t need again.”

We closed.

She asked:

“Can we delete?”

I said:

“Legal cases closed. We can keep one archival copy if you want.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

She thought.

“Delete from your phone. Keep legal drive with lawyer maybe.”

So I did.

The video stopped being daily weapon.

Truth did not disappear.

Then Ellie asked Ben about “I understand.”

He answered himself.

“I chose my parents’ version for several minutes because I was afraid. That was cowardly.”

She asked:

“Would you now?”

“No.”

“How know?”

“Because I’ve had years to practice not doing it.”

Good.

She hugged him.

May you like

That was their relationship.

Not mine.
