Chapter 21 - Linda Asks To See Ellie

When Ellie was eleven, Linda petitioned informally through Ben for a supervised meeting.

Not court petition after years; she asked.

Ben said:

“I won’t decide without Rachel and Ellie.”

Good.

He told me.

My body reacted.

Then I asked Ellie.

“Grandma Linda wants to apologize in person someday.”

Ellie knew story by then.

Not every legal detail.

She had seen scar.

She knew video existed but had not watched.

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

“Do you want?”

“No.”

Honest.

“Then why ask?”

“Because it is your relationship too.”

She thought.

“No.”

“Okay.”

We told Ben.

He told Linda.

Linda replied:

I understand.

No guilt.

At thirteen, Ellie changed mind.

Not because pressure.

She was curious.

We arranged therapist-assisted meeting in neutral office.

Linda seventy-ish? She was 56 at incident, 11 years later 67.

She looked older.

She did not hug.

“Ellie, thank you for seeing me.”

Ellie stared.

“Why did you throw it?”

Direct.

Linda swallowed.

“Because I was angry that you were grabbing Cole’s cup and I wanted to scare you.”

“Did you know it was hot?”

“Yes.”

“Did you want my face burned?”

“No.”

“But you knew it could hurt?”

“I knew hot coffee hurts. I did not stop myself.”

Ellie looked at me.

Then:

“Why did you lie?”

“I was afraid of consequence.”

“Why did Grandpa lie?”

“He wanted protect me.”

“That was stupid.”

Linda almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Do you think it was my fault?”

“No.”

“Did you then?”

Linda’s eyes filled.

“Part of me blamed you because admitting it was mine felt unbearable.”

Ellie nodded.

No forgiveness statement.

Meeting lasted thirty minutes.

After, she said:

“I don’t want see again.”

“Okay.”

And she didn’t for years.

Her choice.

May you like

Linda respected.

That mattered.
