Chapter 20 - My Father Gets Sick

Dad developed heart disease in his late sixties.

Not sudden tragedy.

Manageable.

The first time he was hospitalized, I panicked in a way unrelated to Linda.

He smiled from bed.

“Wrong Carter.”

“What?”

“You have your combat face.”

“I don’t.”

“You do.”

He underwent stent placement.

Recovered.

During follow-up, he handed me folder.

“What?”

“Estate plan.”

“Dad.”

“No secrets.”

That phrase.

He had watched secret family loans damage mine.

Everything listed.

House.

Retirement.

Brokerage.

Beneficiaries.

Medical directive.

No surprise leverage.

He named me and professional co-trustee? I am only child? Let's say I had brother? Not needed. He could name me, with attorney backup.

Then he said:

“Do not use inheritance to control Ellie.”

“I know.”

“Say it.”

“I will not use money to buy access to my daughter.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

Then:

“And if she grows up and marries idiot, you don’t get to solve with money.”

I laughed.

“Specific.”

“Experience.”

Dad lived many more years.

He became stable grandfather.

No secret revenge.
