Chapter 23 - Gary’s Last Years
Gary became quieter after Linda’s prison.
His control had cost him closeness.
Dana visited rarely.
Ben limited.
Grandkids cautious.
He eventually sold large house and moved smaller condo with Linda after release.
Not poverty.
Simpler.
He apologized directly to me once at a graduation event.
“Rachel.”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“I threatened Ben because I thought money made me responsible for his choices.”
“It made you lender.”
He nodded.
“I know now.”
Then:
“I told everyone same story because I thought if we all said it, it became truth.”
That sentence stayed.
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
No hug.
Later he died at seventy-six from stroke.
Ordinary.
No hidden will.
No final confession.
His estate paid no one’s silence.
Loans already repaid.
Linda inherited and later estate plan split between Ben/Dana, not me.
No issue.
At funeral, I did not attend.
Ellie chose to attend with Ben because Gary had become a distant grandfather she knew somewhat.
I supported.
She came home thoughtful.
“Families are weird.”
