Chapter 23 - Ethan’s Final Apology

Ethan completed all parole/supervision requirements when Grace was sixteen.
No more criminal monitoring.
Restitution formally satisfied.
He asked to meet me alone.
I hesitated.
Noah said:
“You don’t owe him.”
“I know.”
I went.
Public café.
Ethan looked nervous.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Coming.”
“What do you want?”
“To apologize without asking for anything.”
I waited.
“I’m sorry I stole from you.”
I nodded.
“I’m sorry I used your pregnancy to build a story that you were unstable.”
Another nod.
“I’m sorry I asked Mom to provoke you.”
My throat tightened.
“I’m sorry I disabled the camera because I wanted no record.”
He stopped.
Then:
“And I’m sorry that when she asked if it was time, I gave her permission without saying the word push.”
That was first time he phrased it exactly.
“I knew what she meant?”
He closed eyes.
“I knew she meant she was going to physically frighten you. I didn’t know exactly how. When she stood behind you, I knew she might shove.”
“Then you nodded.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you hospitalized.”
There.
No courtroom language.
“I didn’t want you dead. I didn’t want Grace hurt. But I decided the risk was acceptable because I wanted money and control.”
I stared at him.
“You understand that doesn’t make it better.”
“Yes.”
“I spent years wondering whether I misread one second.”
“I know.”
“Did you ever think about stopping her?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The second after I nodded.”
My chest tightened.
“Too late.”
“Yes.”
We sat.
Then he said:
“I’m not asking forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“I’m not asking to be friends.”
“Good.”
“I want you to know Grace will never hear me say you caused my sentence.”
That mattered.
“Thank you.”
He cried.
I did not.
When I left, Noah asked later:
“Feel better?”
“No.”
“Worse?”
“No.”
“What?”
“Finished.”
May you like
Not forgiven.
Finished.
