Chapter 10 - The Camera Ethan Tried to Kill

The Bennett foyer camera was controlled through a wall panel near the staircase.

Ethan knew the code.

At 3:30:41 p.m., system log recorded:

FOYER CAMERA PRIVACY MODE ENABLED.

At 3:31:09:

PRIVACY MODE FAILED — CLOUD SYNC ERROR.

The camera continued recording locally and to cloud.

Ethan did not know.

The neighbor footage showed him touching panel.

Then returning to landing.

Then looking at Margaret.

Then nodding.

Twenty three seconds later, she pushed me.

That was perhaps the clearest evidence of planning short of a written instruction.

His defense said:

He turned camera off because he anticipated a private argument.

Possible.

Then why did he lie that he was not there?

Why tell Margaret:

Stick to slip.

Why ask for incapacity papers beforehand?

Why need 72 hours?

Why plan PR?

Why move money?

The prosecution’s case became cumulative.

No one fact proved everything.

Together, pattern.

Ethan’s trial was scheduled for the following spring.

Meanwhile, divorce court had to untangle assets.

Our Boston condo repairs finished.

We jointly owned it.

I wanted sale.

Ethan wanted keep.

The judge allowed sale with proceeds escrowed pending division.

It sold.

I bought a smaller townhouse in Brookline near Helen and Grace’s pediatrician.

No staircase for first year.

Not intentionally? Maybe subconsciously.

Two floors still eventually.

But at first, one level mattered.

Grace grew.

Smile.

Crawl.

First tooth.

Every milestone Ethan saw mostly through supervised visits.

I sometimes felt guilty.

Dr. Morris asked:

“For what?”

“Keeping him supervised.”

“Did you create the evidence requiring supervision?”

“No.”

“Then guilt belongs where?”

I rolled eyes.

Therapists love questions.

At six months, family evaluator recommended continued supervision because Ethan still denied any involvement in fall and framed case to visitors as “Claire weaponizing pregnancy.”

No insight.

That mattered.

At one visit, he told supervisor:

“Once criminal case clears me, Claire won’t have an excuse.”

Not:

I need to rebuild trust.

Again.

Control.

Then his personal finances worsened.

Bennett Grove entered receivership.

His 12.5% interest became nearly worthless.

The $1.8 million guarantee was negotiated down after lender liquidated collateral, leaving about $640,000 personal liability.

He blamed me.

In a recorded jail? no. He wasn't jailed. In an email through counsel, he wrote:

If Claire had simply approved financing, none of this would have happened.

Laura read it.

“Useful.”

I said:

“Terrifying.”

He still believed my refusal caused his choices.

That would become central at trial.

Margaret, incarcerated awaiting final transfer, gave prosecutors full cooperation.

She testified in grand jury? Already. For trial, she would.

Her credibility was vulnerable.

She was accomplice.

Defense would say she blamed son to reduce sentence.

True concern.

Prosecution needed corroboration.

They had:

Messages.

Video.

System logs.

Thomas Reed.

Samantha Hale.

Benjamin Cole.

Anna Monroe.

Bank records.

Strong.

Then one more witness surfaced.

David Bennett, Ethan’s uncle.

He had been at the house two weeks before fall.

He told police Ethan said:

“Pregnancy gives Claire too much leverage. Once she has the baby, it’ll be impossible to move her.”

David laughed at time.

Asked:

“Move her where?”

Ethan answered:

“Out of the way.”

Ambiguous.

But context.

David also heard Margaret say:

“Then break the spell.”

No one knew what that meant.

I did not need it.

Case already enough.

The surprise came from Thomas Reed.

He found a calendar invitation Ethan sent.

Title:

Contingency Execution — Monday 9:00 AM

Attendees:

Ethan.

Margaret.

Thomas.

Samantha Hale.

Not me.

Scheduled for morning after fall.

Agenda attachment:

Confirm Claire unavailable.

Activate authority.

Submit Grant Harbor consent.

Release public statement if required.

The plan had a meeting.

Not violence instructions.

May you like

But exploitation plan.

And Ethan still insisted the fall was random.
