Chapter 5 - Beatrice’s First Warning

Beatrice stayed in hospital for two nights.

Then she refused to return to penthouse.

Her attorney arranged a furnished apartment.

Fernando’s bail conditions prohibited contact.

For the first time in forty one years of marriage, Beatrice slept somewhere he did not choose.

She hated it.

That surprised people.

They expected relief.

She cried because the sheets smelled wrong.

Because there was no grandfather clock.

Because she missed the view.

Because trauma does not erase attachment to home.

Then she began talking.

Not all at once.

Her first warning to Julian had come four years earlier.

He had just finished his MBA and joined Vance Holdings.

Fernando put him in “strategic operations.”

Julian discovered vendors paying commissions back to Vance Meridian Consulting.

He asked Beatrice:

“Is Dad skimming?”

She panicked.

“Don't use that word.”

Julian laughed.

Then confronted Fernando.

Fernando explained:

“These are performance fees Sterling never formalized because old man Ignacio hates paying what he owes.”

That became family mythology.

Sterling underpaid.

Vance deserved more.

Therefore hidden fees were justice.

Julian accepted partly.

Then he began receiving distributions.

At first $25,000 bonus.

Then $60,000.

Then $110,000.

He knew money came from “consulting reserve.”

Did he know fake invoices?

By second year, yes.

Email showed Monica:

Beacon Shore invoice attached. No work order required. Use same coding as last quarter.

Julian replied:

Got it.

He approved.

There was no work.

That was participation.

Then Beatrice.

She found email on shared printer.

She confronted Julian.

“This can put you in prison.”

He said:

“Dad says Sterling knows.”

“Do you believe him?”

No answer.

Then:

“Get out.”

Julian became angry.

“You want me to abandon family business because you’re scared of Dad?”

“Yes.

She told investigators:

“I said yes.”

Then he laughed.

“You never left him.”

That silenced her.

A brutal truth.

Then Valerie.

When Fernando mentioned me before Julian and I met, Beatrice grew afraid.

She asked:

“Why Valerie?”

Fernando:

“Because Julian needs someone with backbone.”

Then privately to Monica, Beatrice overheard:

“If Sterling is family, audit becomes family issue.”

There.

Not necessarily marry to steal.

Marry to soften scrutiny.

Then Julian met me.

Did Fernando engineer charity dinner?

He encouraged Julian to attend.

The event was public.

I attended because Sterling Foundation sponsored.

No elaborate stalking.

He put two people in same room.

Julian did rest.

That nuance mattered.

Then Beatrice warned Julian after third date:

“Do not let your father turn her into a transaction.”

Julian answered:

“I’m dating her because I like her.”

Beatrice believed.

Maybe true.

Then six months later, Fernando asked Julian for details about my father’s audit schedule.

Julian refused twice.

Third time, he told.

Why?

Messages:

JULIAN:

Daniel says external audit starts after year-end.

FERNANDO:

Which firm?

JULIAN:

He didn’t say.

FERNANDO:

Find out.

Julian never found firm.

But he leaked timing.

Then Fernando accelerated shell cleanup.

Several vendors dissolved.

Records moved.

Beatrice noticed.

Then she began copying.

Why not Sterling?

Fear.

Again.

Then engagement.

Beatrice almost told me at bridal shower.

She carried one printed statement.

Fernando arrived unexpectedly.

She put away.

I remembered her pale face.

I thought nerves.

Then wedding week.

Fernando arranged $900k transfer plan.

Beatrice found letter from Julian saying:

I will not forge her signature.

She thought he would refuse.

Then wedding night, she saw him whispering with Fernando near study.

Later Fernando said:

“Done.”

She understood.

She confronted in front of family.

That triggered violence.

“What did you say before I came in?”

Beatrice stared.

“I said, ‘You stole from her before she even took off wedding dress.’”

Fernando told her shut up.

She said:

“I’m telling Valerie.”

Then shove.

So the assault was connected to money.

Not because Fernando feared the single bank statement exactly.

Because Beatrice finally announced disclosure.

Then I asked:

“Why did Monica act like nothing happened?”

Beatrice laughed bitterly.

“Monica thinks surviving Fernando means agreeing with him.”

But Monica also profited.

“Yes.”

“Did she know fake vendors?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“More than me.”

Then Beatrice told me something difficult.

She was not only a coerced signer.

In 2019, Fernando asked her to sign a letter stating Mar Azul advisory fees had been disclosed to Sterling.

She knew that was false.

She signed.

Why?

Fernando threatened to cut off money to their daughter? Julian only child? We need maybe Julian is only child. He threatened divorce and leave her with nothing, and he had shoved her two nights earlier.

She signed.

Then another backdated confirmation in 2021.

She knew.

Two conscious false acts.

“I need to tell prosecutors.”

“Yes.”

“Will they charge me?”

“I don't know.”

She nodded.

For first time, she did not ask me to protect her.

That mattered.

Then my father Daniel visited.

Beatrice could barely look at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel said:

“We’ll figure out what you knew and what you did. I’m not going to decide that in hospital room.”

Good.

Then:

“My daughter says you helped her.”

Beatrice started crying.

Daniel left.

Later he told me:

“I don't forgive her yet.”

Neither did I.

But she had pulled me toward the truth.

Then Gonzalo called.

The second ledger contained a column no one had understood.

S.P.

Sterling Participation.

At first we feared someone inside our family had been paid.

Then they traced initials.

Not person.

Special Projects.

A cost code.

Relief.

Not every abbreviation a betrayal.

Then one actual insider emerged.

A former Sterling regional procurement director, Martin Cole, had received $380,000 from Vance entities.

He had retired six years earlier.

May you like

Now there was someone on our side of table.

The conspiracy had not survived fifteen years through Vances alone.
