Chapter 11 - Why Julian Married Me

There was never one answer.

I wanted one.

Did Julian marry me because he loved me?

Or because I was Sterling?

The evidence refused simplicity.

The first meeting was influenced by Fernando.

He encouraged Julian to attend the charity dinner because he knew I would be there.

Julian did not know that until later? Messages:

FERNANDO:

Sterling girl is at Bay Foundation Thursday. Go.

JULIAN:

Why?

FERNANDO:

Because you’re single and she’s smart.

JULIAN:

That’s creepy.

He went.

Then met me.

Three weeks later:

JULIAN TO MARK:

Dad is asking too many questions about Valerie's family.

MARK:

Then stop feeding him.

JULIAN:

I am.

He was not entirely.

Then four months:

FERNANDO:

Audit timing?

JULIAN:

Stop asking me.

Then six months:

He forwarded my text about year-end audit.

So boundary eroded.

Then proposal.

Julian bought ring himself.

No Fernando.

Asked my father.

Traditional.

My father liked him.

There was no evidence Fernando ordered proposal.

Then after engagement:

FERNANDO:

This solves more than you understand.

JULIAN:

It solves nothing. Valerie’s prenup is Fort Knox.

FERNANDO:

Marriage changes access.

JULIAN:

Not legally.

Fernando:

Legally isn’t only thing.

That sentence.

Then Julian told friend:

Sometimes I think Dad sees my wedding as acquisition.

Mark:

Do you?

Julian:

No.

I believed he did not.

Then why wedding gift transfer?

Because by then Vance liquidity crisis.

Redwell bank threatened default.

Fernando said 900k bridge or company could lose control of two properties.

Julian panicked.

He convinced himself temporary.

He also knew I would say no.

So he did not ask.

That is theft.

Then proxy.

He knew Fernando and Monica prepared.

He did not sign or use.

Messages showed he told Monica:

Delete that garbage. Valerie will never sign.

She did not delete.

So he resisted share control.

Nuance.

Then vendor fraud.

He participated.

Why?

Family business.

Money.

Fear.

Loyalty.

Career.

Then relationship.

I asked Mark, his friend, through investigators? Mark testified.

“Did Julian ever say he was marrying Valerie for money?”

“No.”

“Did he talk about her shares?”

“Only complaining her family treats governance like religion.”

Then:

“He was in love.”

I hated hearing.

Because love was supposed to mean something.

It did.

Just not enough.

Then my therapist? Let's introduce Dr. Mara Klein after public mess.

I started seeing Dr. Mara Klein because I could not sleep.

She asked:

“Why does it matter whether he loved you?”

“Because if he didn't, I was fooled.”

“And if he did?”

“Then I chose someone who loved me and still used me.”

“Which feels worse?”

I stared.

The second.

Then she said:

“Love is not a compliance system.”

I laughed despite myself.

Corporate family.

Then my father.

Daniel admitted he had trusted Julian too.

He had told him about audit casually at family dinner.

“Maybe I gave him information.”

“You didn't forge anything.”

“No, but I should have kept company information inside company.”

Sterling tightened policies.

Family members no longer got informal operational updates.

Again.

No victim perfection.

Then my grandfather.

Ignacio said:

“If Julian loved you, that is his tragedy, not your obligation.”

That one stayed.

Then Julian’s federal proffer.

He admitted:

He knew three vendors were sham.

He signed two false conflict certifications.

He received distributions.

He leaked audit timing.

He knew Fernando wanted wedding gift.

He initiated $900k transfer without my consent and knowingly used signature image.

He knew proxy draft existed but did not intend to use.

He did not know exact Mar Azul balance.

He did not participate in Martin Cole’s original kickbacks.

He did not create shells.

He did not direct violence against Beatrice.

He slapped me by his own choice.

That statement was comprehensive.

Then cooperation.

He turned over passwords.

Explained ledger codes.

Identified bankers.

Helped trace Mar Azul.

Prosecutors considered.

Then he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and identity related offense for forged wedding transfer, plus false certification count.

Sentence later.

Then divorce deposition.

He invoked Fifth on some until plea.

After plea, he answered.

My attorney asked:

“Did you marry Valerie to obtain Sterling assets?”

“No.”

“Did you understand your father hoped marriage would influence Sterling?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Valerie?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she would leave.”

There.

Then:

“Did you love her?”

“Yes.”

My attorney paused.

“Did loving her stop you from taking her money?”

May you like

“No.”

That was final answer.
