Chapter 19 - Julian Comes Home

Julian served a little under four years with credit.
He was thirty six when released.
I was thirty three? Timeline mismatch: Valerie 20s at wedding, maybe 29. Four years later 33. Julian early30s, 34 -> 38. Good. Let's say no exact.
Victim notification arrived.
I had not spoken to him since my one letter.
Conditions:
Supervised release.
No contact with me without consent.
Financial monitoring.
No fiduciary role involving others' funds initially.
Restitution.
I did not request special geographic exile.
He moved to Boston with an old college friend and took a project management job in commercial construction.
No family finance.
Beatrice saw him two weeks later.
She told me only because I asked.
“How was he?”
“Quiet.”
“Different?”
“I don't know.”
Good answer.
Then Julian paid restitution monthly.
Not much at first.
He sold remaining watch collection and a small inherited brokerage account.
Money applied.
No heroic.
Then Fernando remained incarcerated.
Monica had been released earlier.
She worked? Maybe administrative job not finance control.
She and Julian did not speak for a year.
Then family slowly.
Not mine.
Then Julian requested permission to send one final email.
I declined.
He respected.
Then I saw him unexpectedly at Beatrice’s sister’s funeral two years later.
I had attended because Beatrice asked.
Julian stood across chapel.
No contact.
After service, he approached only after Beatrice asked if okay.
I said yes.
“Valerie.”
“Julian.”
He looked older.
No ring.
“I won't keep you.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Then something I needed to say.
“You didn't become your father because you slapped me once.”
He looked confused.
“You became like him every time you decided what I was allowed to know.”
He closed eyes.
“Yes.”
Then:
“And every time you took without asking and called it temporary.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I hope you understand difference.”
“I do now.”
Maybe.
Then he asked:
“Do you hate me?”
I thought.
“No.”
His face changed.
“That's not forgiveness.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I don't want a relationship.”
“I know.”
We parted.
No hug.
That was enough.
Then Beatrice later apologized.
“For putting you in room with him.”
“I said yes.”
Right.
Then my life.
I had dated a man named Nathan Cole for a year. It ended amicably.
I had learned to say no without courtroom.
Then at thirty seven, I met Avery? User expects white American male maybe. Let's use "Evan Mercer", architect. He knew of public case, but did not ask details.
We dated slowly.
No need marry. Eventually we did at 42 maybe.
But if story ends many years later, can mention.
He asked before joining finances.
I said separate accounts.
He said fine.
We bought a house with clear percentages and joint attorney review.
No family gifts.
Ordinary.
Then the first time his mother contradicted his father at dinner, Evan laughed and agreed with her.
I almost cried.
He thought I disliked dessert.
I explained later.
Healthy families argue without violence.
Revelation.
Then Beatrice met Evan eventually.
She said:
“He asks permission to clear plates.”
I laughed.
“Low standard.”
“Yes.”
We both knew.
Then Ignacio died at eighty seven.
Natural.
Family funeral.
No last secret.
His estate had been planned transparently for years.
My share through trusts disclosed.
No Vance surprise.
He left me a handwritten note:
Never confuse secrecy with strength.
I kept.
Then Daniel became older.
Sterling Meridian still operated.
The fraud became a case study in internal controls.
Not identity.
Then Fernando release? Eleven-year sentence, maybe around age 77 after ~9 years. Could be later. Need closure.
Before that, Beatrice never visited prison.
Julian did once.
Maybe.
Fernando wrote one letter to me from prison?
No contact. He sent through counsel apologizing? Could be later.
No need.
Then at restitution review, Fernando had paid from forfeiture, not wages mostly.
He still insisted in filings Sterling owed him.
His worldview changed slowly if at all.
Then one year, he wrote Beatrice:
I understand now that you were afraid of me.
She read.
No reply.
That may be only accountability.
Then release at age 75? He served maybe 9.5 with credits. He moved to assisted? Still healthy.
Beatrice requested no contact.
May you like
Court no longer automatic after sentence, but she maintained civil order? She could. He respected eventually.
No reunion.
