Chapter 24 - The Silver Tureen

Atlas House renovated the private dining room seven years after the gala.

Ava Collins, now director of events, invited Noel to the reopening.

This time Noel brought her team.

Jasmine.

Two analysts.

Grant.

Maya.

Even Owen Price, retired from Holt Table, attended.

The old silver tureen had been replaced.

Apparently the original dented when it hit the table.

Ava joked:

“We considered framing it.”

Noel said:

“Please don’t.”

They laughed.

Dinner began.

Tomato bisque appeared.

Of course.

Noel lifted her spoon.

Grant said:

“Behave.”

She stared.

He immediately raised both hands.

“Poor joke.”

Noel laughed so hard she nearly spilled soup.

That mattered.

Context.

Trust.

A joke is funny when nobody is afraid.

Halfway through dinner, Ava gave a short toast.

“To rooms getting new memories.”

Noel almost objected to sentimentality.

Then let it stand.

Afterward, she walked to the exact place where Darius had slapped her.

Nothing happened.

No flashback swallowed her.

No dramatic release.

It was floor.

Wood.

Light.

A room.

She had spent years giving that square of space too much mythology.

Ava approached.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Noel looked across the room.

People laughing.

Nobody waiting for her to save anything.

May you like

“Really.”

She went back to table.
