Chapter 19 - Darius Comes Home

Darius served twenty two months after credit and good conduct, then entered supervised release.

Noel learned from a formal notice because her protective order and victim notification preferences remained in system.

She felt nothing for thirty seconds.

Then fear.

Serena helped.

“Is he allowed contact?”

“No.”

“Where will he live?”

“Indiana, according to notice.”

“Does he know your address?”

“Probably old one. I moved.”

Noel had bought a condo in Lincoln Park.

Smaller than marital home.

Hers.

Security good.

Noel renewed civil no contact protections only as legally available and necessary? Better domestic protective order had expired. Darius's sentencing conditions included no direct contact with Noel without consent for a period. Fine.

He complied.

No messages.

No flowers.

No sudden appearance.

That mattered.

He found work eventually.

Not CEO.

A restaurant operations consultancy employed him under compliance restrictions? Felony fraud may make executive roles harder. He worked for a small equipment distributor in business development, according to public record.

Noel did not track.

His Holt Table economic shares were eventually sold under a secondary transaction to Arbor at negotiated discount because he needed liquidity for restitution and loans.

He exited ownership completely.

That closed corporate tie.

Holt Table was no longer his.

It also was not Noel’s.

That felt correct.

Grant Mercer finally invested in Benton Strategy?

Not yet.

He called after Noel hired employee number twelve.

“You’re growing.”

“Against my better judgment.”

“Need capital?”

“No.”

“Call when answer changes.”

“I will.”

Noel had learned that saying no did not insult competent people.

Grant accepted boundaries.

That was why she trusted him professionally.

Then Ava Collins invited Noel to Atlas House’s fifth anniversary? Actually only ~2 years. Better a charity dinner at Atlas House.

Noel accepted.

Not because venue needed reclaiming.

Because she wanted to know whether the room still owned a piece of her.

She wore dark green satin.

Not the same dress.

Similar enough.

Ava met her at entrance.

“Want different room?”

“No.”

The private dining room looked almost identical.

Black windows.

Candles.

Silver.

Noel’s chest tightened.

She stayed.

At dinner, the server brought tomato bisque.

Ava had not planned that? It was house classic. She asked beforehand maybe.

Noel stared at bowl.

Then laughed.

The guest beside her asked:

“What?”

“Long story.”

She ate the soup.

May you like

It was excellent.

No one wore it.
