Chapter 16 - The Company Without Him

Holt Table survived Darius.

That surprised people who thought founders were companies.

Arbor Hospitality brought in a new CEO, Marianne Cole, fifty two, restaurant operator with no interest in mythology.

She called Noel.

“I need to understand the license.”

“What part?”

“What we can use, what we can’t, and what I should stop employees from saying belongs to us.”

Noel liked her immediately.

They reviewed.

Marianne removed “proprietary Holt Expansion Engine” from marketing.

Replaced with:

Expansion planning incorporates licensed Benton Market Grid methodology and Holt Table proprietary operating data.

Accurate.

Boring.

Perfect.

Holt Table closed two underperforming locations.

Opened one new.

Revenue stabilized.

No magical rocket.

Employees stayed.

Owen Price returned to CFO only, relieved to stop serving as interim CEO.

He sent Noel a bottle of champagne.

She laughed when it arrived.

The note:

Water is also acceptable.

She kept that one.

Benton Strategy grew to five employees.

Noel refused to call herself founder in every sentence.

She had learned title inflation from Darius.

Her clients came because work was good.

Grant Mercer introduced two.

No investment.

Just introductions.

Noel paid referral nothing because he did not ask.

She and Grant became professional acquaintances.

Nothing romantic.

That mattered.

Not every powerful man in a woman’s recovery story needs to become new husband.

Leila disappeared from Noel’s life.

She moved to Boston after probation allowed.

Worked in operations for a nonprofit culinary incubator, according to a mutual acquaintance.

Noel wished her neither failure nor friendship.

Darius began his sentence.

He wrote once through approved address.

Noel returned unopened.

Her therapist asked:

“Why?”

“I already know his words.”

“Do you fear apology?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I don’t owe him audience.”

Good.

The final divorce judgment entered eleven months after Atlas House.

Noel stood in court.

Darius appeared remotely from custody.

Judge confirmed settlement.

Irreconcilable differences.

Property resolved.

No maintenance.

No children.

Final.

Noel walked outside.

Chicago wind.

No dramatic rain.

She called Maya.

“It’s done.”

“One part.”

“Don’t lawyer me.”

Maya laughed.

Then Noel called her sister? We haven't established. Better assistant/employee? She called Tessa, her longtime friend. We can introduce minimally. "her oldest friend Tessa Greene". Fine.

“Dinner?”

“Anywhere but Atlas House.”

Not yet.

They ate tacos.

No candles.

No tuxedos.

No one slapped anyone.

Noel went home alone and slept nine hours.
