Chapter 13 - The Dress Receipt

The divorce deposition lasted seven hours.

Darius looked thinner.

No tuxedo.

Gray suit.

No audience to perform for.

Rachel Dominguez asked:

“Did you purchase a cream silk dress for Leila Morgan?”

“Yes.”

“Using which account?”

“Our joint credit card.”

Noel almost laughed.

“Did Noel know?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Noel it was a designer sample?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To avoid an argument.”

“Were you in a sexual relationship with Ms. Morgan?”

Darius’s lawyer objected to wording? But he can answer.

“Yes.”

“When did it begin?”

Seven months before gala.

“Did you tell Ms. Morgan you intended to divorce Noel?”

“Yes.”

“Had you told Noel?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Ms. Morgan she would receive equity?”

“Yes.”

“Did you execute grant?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Financing had to close.”

Then:

“Did you tell Ms. Morgan Noel had no ownership interest in expansion methodology?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Benton Strategy had a written agreement?”

“Yes.”

Each answer stripped another story.

Noel did not enjoy watching him shrink.

She enjoyed not needing to argue.

Documents asked questions for her.

Then Darius’s attorney questioned Noel.

“Isn’t it true you poured hot soup over Mr. Holt?”

“Yes.”

“Intentionally?”

“Yes.”

“Were you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Were you trying to humiliate him?”

Noel thought.

“No.”

“What were you trying to do?”

“Make him stop coming toward me.”

The attorney played video.

Could argue.

The domestic battery case already resolved.

Noel did not pretend she was proud of the soup.

In therapy, she admitted something harder.

Part of her had wanted to hurt him.

Fear and anger existed together.

Self-defense analysis belonged to law.

Her emotional truth could be messier.

Dr. Serena Walsh asked:

“If you could redo that moment?”

Noel considered.

“I’d take the tureen and put it down between us.”

“Really?”

“No.”

Serena smiled slightly.

“Try again.”

“I’d leave before he touched me a second time.”

There.

Not because Darius deserved less consequence.

Because Noel wanted less violence in her own life.

The soup became viral inside their social circle despite no public video release.

People exaggerated.

Noel had “scalded” him.

Thrown a pot.

Attacked first.

She stopped correcting strangers.

Those who mattered had footage.

Then Ava Collins contacted her with an invitation.

Atlas House wanted to comp a private dinner.

Noel declined.

“I’m not ready.”

No problem.

The restaurant manager sent a handwritten note:

Whenever the room feels like yours again.

Noel kept it.

She would return later.

Not yet.

Federal case moved toward trial.

Then prosecutors disclosed another message recovered from Darius’s phone.

Darius to Leila, one hour before the gala:

If Noel pushes back tonight, let her. Grant needs to see why I can’t have her involved after close.

Leila:

Don’t start anything.

Darius:

She starts everything.

There.

That was how abusers write history in advance.

He had decided whatever Noel did would become proof she caused it.

The slap was still his choice in the moment.

But the narrative had been prepared.
